Drummer Ed Thigpen and Grammy-nominated film composer Terence Blanchard will be part of the new Vanguard Concert Series at the 2005 Cool Jazz Winnipeg Festival. Thigpen has played on more than 1,000 recordings during his 50-plus year career and toured with artists such as Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson, while Blanchard has scored the soundtracks for films such as Mo'Better Blues and Malcolm X.
The artists will join Roy Haynes, Dianne Reeves and Dave Holland as part of the new Vanguard Concert Series, which gives jazz lovers the opportunity to save money when they purchase tickets to two or more shows.
"I wanted to create some solid incentives for people to check out more than one show," said executive director Paul Nolin.
The Vanguard shows at the Manitoba Theatre Centre are $39 each, or two for $69, three for $89 and four for $99.
The complete Jazz Fest lineup was announced at a press conference yesterday. The 16th annual festival is June 16-25. Other acts scheduled for his year's big mainstage shows includes Latino rockers Los Lobos at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre, Juno winning hip-hop artist k-os at the Burton Cummings Theatre and Papa Mambo's tribute to Tito Puente at the Prairie Theatre Exchange. Tickets for mainstage performances cost between $25 and $39 at all Ticketmaster locations.
The New Groove Series at the Pyramid Cabaret features Ray Robinson, RJD2, Diplo, Bonobo, Amon Tobin and Bugge Wesseltoft.
The Late Night Series takes place at eight downtown venues, with artists such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Sophie Milman, James Carter, Walle Larsson, Bjorn Thoroddsen, Button Factory, Jodie Borle, God Made Me Funky and the Buhr Quartet.
Individual admission is from $10 to $20 per venue. A Late Night Series wristband is available for $20 each night, allowing admission to all Late Night Series venues.
For even more bang for your buck, a new Club Card is available for $80, which allows admission to all Late Night and New Groove Series events all week. The card is only available until June 10. Tickets for all shows go on sale April 30.
The Jazz Fest kicks off with four free shows in Old Market Square from June 16-19, with a new Family Day from noon to 5 p.m. on June 19.
