View Full Version : Firefox 1.0.4 Login Problem

Sorry to bring this up again, but I'm frustrated and didn't expect this to arise, frankly.

I went through several months of anxiety trying to enjoy Jazz Corner via this wonderful new browser (Firefox 1.0.4), only to find those efforts thwarted. I'd launch JC and see the usual Welcome, Ron Thorne, then find that I'd have to Login again after very minor navigation on the site. By the way, that's especially annoying after composing a lengthy, detailed response -- to find out that it's been deleted because you're no longer recognized by your favorite website and browser.

Then, suddenly, without fanfare, everything seemed to align and I wasn't seeing the message telling me that I needed to Login again in order to post. I was elated! I enjoyed this status for the past several months.

Then, a couple of days ago, again without warning or fanfare, everything reverted back to the old crap . . . I'm forced to Login again with User Name and Password after minor navigation on JC. Aaaarrrggghhh!

Throughout these trials, my failsafe has been Firebird version 0.7, which has never failed to recognize my Login on Jazz Corner. That's the browser I'm using to post this new thread.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Ron

I've never had that prob... since I've been using FF 0.8.... a new version (which I've been using and is fine... ) of 1.0.5 is out... I guess it might be useful to upgrade...

Ron, you are two versions behind. Try 1.0.6. I've never had your problem. If you go to tools/options/saved passwords/view saved passwords, do you see your JC login?

I see http://jazzcornertalk.com under site, Gordon B under username. If I click on show passwords, I see my JC password. I suggest you first delete all jazzcornertalk logins, then download and install 1.0.6, then login one more time. If all goes well the problem will go away.

Thanks, Gordon.

• Yes, I realize that ver. 1.0.6 is out and available.

• Yes, I can see my JC login when I view Saved Passwords.

I'm perplexed by the fact that I haven't had this problem with 1.0.4 until very recently, and never with the old Firebird ver. 0.7. The onset was sudden, and nothing new had been added to our computer.

Dizmonk isn't experiencing this with ver. 0.8, so the problem doesn't seem to be only related to older versions of the software.

I guess I can simply chalk this experience up to the enigmatic nature of computers and everything associated with them. . . period.

EDIT: Now I see my User Name but not my password when I lose my JC Login.

Better yet, PM me all your logins and passwords and I'll check into this problem for you. Make sure to include the sites for all the financial institutions you conduct business with. That will help me fix the problem faster.

Try:

Select TOOLS
Select OPTIONS
Select PRIVACY
Select COOKIES
make sure 'allow sites to set cookies' is checked
make sure it says 'Keep Cookies: until they expire"
Select EXCEPTIONS Button
Enter www.jazzcornertalk.com
Click "Allow"

See if that works.

Not unless you're careless or a dummy. Password Mangers aren't uncommon. It's actually part and parcel of Firefox's security system. It's optional as to whether or not you wish for Firefox to remember a User Name and Password. You can also set a Master Password, preventing anyone other than you from seeing any saved passwords. You may also indicate sites for which you never want information recorded and saved.

Somehow, Firefox has forgotten my JC Login Password now. Aaaarrghh!

Those settings are fine. Thanks, me wag.

Is there a method by which I can re-install a saved password? Even after restarting our computer I haven't gotten the usual pop-up prompt asking me if I'd like Firefox Password Manager to save my JC info.

Ron, are you sure that your JC login is only there once? Firefox could get confused if you have multiple JC logins. The only way I know to re-install a saved password is to delete the login and then save the login/password as if it is the first time.

Yes, Gordon, the JC Login appears only once in Firefox. My Password was there earlier today, but has now vanished. Perhaps if I restart my computer I'll get the Password Manager prompt.

I'm wondering if Lois changed servers, or added or changed some software recently which may have affected my settings.

Don't know if she has had it done yet, Ron.

But she did say this last week: http://jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/showpost.php?p=377589&postcount=169

Ron,

I had a similar problem after I first switched to Firefox. I cannot remember what I did (and I did a lot of things) or how I fixed it but my bookmark is http://jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/index.php? and the saved password in Firefox TOOLS etc (that I had not looked at before) points to http://jazzcornertalk.com but does not contain my password. However, I have no problem getting in and out.

I did once inadvertantly clear cookies and/or saved form information and it took a while to get back in to various other places but not here as I recall.

My sincere thanks to all who are trying to assist me with this aggravation.

This type of computer glitch is particularly exasperating to me for a number of reasons, not the least of which is its inconsistency. I've navigated through 5-6 mouse clicks on JC at the moment, aware that I could be asked to Log in again at any moment. At other times, only one mouse click is required before you must Log in again.

Here are a few things I observed today which may offer some clues to someone reading this thread.

• When I first checked my Saved Passwords today, I noted two entries for jazzcornertalk.com -- one with and one without my JC password. So, I deleted the one without my password, thinking that may be source of confusion for Firefox.

• When I checked back a few minutes later, the remaining entry for this site was also missing my Password. It vaporized in a matter of minutes for no apparent reason. What the . . .

• I Logged Out of Jazz Corner and restarted our computer. Eventually, I was able to see the Firefox pop-up prompt asking me if I wanted Password Manager to remember the User Name and Password for this site. I clicked on Yes. My User Name is stored again, but not my Password.

I'm copying this message for my own protection, because I fully expect to be asked to Log in again as soon as I hit the Submit Reply button.

I'm still open to suggestions.

Thanks.

Ron, it sure sounds like a Cookie problem. Can you see whether your browser has a Cookie for JC/Speakeasy?

I have always found this to be a great idea, no matter what. I've had posts go to that great thread in the sky enough times to realize the clipboard is truly mans(and womans)best friend.

Another good thing to check out.

Also, IE has different security levels it can be set at. And if it is set too high, it will not accept JC cookies. And if it is set to the maximum, it will not accept your log in at all.

Just a thought.

It does sound like a Cookie issue, however I have my Cookies set to Allow JC. Please see post #9.

By the way, I was able to post #15 without Logging in again, but on the very next mouse click . . . you guessed it.

It's maddening and elusive, like looking for an intermittent electrical problem in a vehicle.

The only website adversely affected is Jazz Corner, by the way. Firefox works flawlessly in every other respect.

I'm now posting here using my old tried-and-true Firebird ver. 0.7. . . . again. Sure glad I saved it on my desktop.

Thought you might be interested in this - don't know if it's related. But interesting it was around the same time you started having some problems...

Mozilla.org Site Hit With Access Glitches July 25, 2005

The Mozilla Foundation's main Web site is suffering from intermittent performance problems.

TechWeb News

The Mozilla Foundation's main site -- mozilla.org -- and home of its Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail client, suffered intermittent performance problems staring Sunday and continuing Monday, a Web tracking firm said.
According to U.K.-based Netcraft, mozilla.org, which runs off the Apache Web server 2.0.52 software under Red Hat's distribution of Linux, took as long as 10 seconds to load for some users Sunday and Monday. Approximately 15 percent of the requests for the page from mid-day Sunday through mid-day Monday, said Netcraft, failed entirely.

"Version 1.0.6 of Firefox was released last week, but it's not clear whether the update contributed to the sluggish performance for the site," Netcraft said in a statement.

The last time the site was bogged down by large numbers of download requests was when Firefox launched its 1.0 edition in November 2004.

Mozilla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reason(s) behind the site problems.

A little more than a week ago, Mozilla acknowledged that its SpreadFirefox.com site had been hacked, and that it had taken the site offline for several days to investigate the intrusion.

SpreadFirefox returned to normal operation last week, but Mozilla representatives urged all registered users to change their passwords.

Ron,

You may well have done this already but I recall now that I uninstalled Firefox. Then I searched the registry for Firefox references and deleted them. Then I reinstalled and, touch wood, have been okay since.

mjb, that's about the only thing that I haven't tried yet this time around. I'm very close to that approach, however.

I downloaded and installed Firefox 1.0.6 today, which made absolutely no difference, whatsoever.

Even though I'm a computer nerd, there are clearly one or two things not working properly here:

1. Cookies w/ Jazz Corner in some manner, though I've taken great pains to make sure that Firefox Allows them (until they expire) on this browser.

2. Saved Passwords in the Firefox Password Manager system. My password used to reside there, but only my User Name does now, despite repeated attempts to reinstate my password.

I feel as if I'm going slightly bonkers with this nonsense. And, JC is the only site affected.

Then there's the nagging question -- "why does Jazz Corner act/react absolutely perfectly with an older version of the Mozilla software, Firebird 0.7?" It's maddening.

Help!

Update:

I've now gone into Tools/Options/Cookies/View Cookies in Firefox 1.0.6, and found the following entries:

jazzcornertalk.com

bbpassword
bbuserid
bblastvisit
bblastactivity

I can even see specific information about a selected Cookie, the Content of which is a 32-character code, comprised of letters and numerals.

That would seem to indicate that my User Name and Password should be stored and accessible, as well as confirm that fact that I've chosen to Allow Cookies to be set by Jazz Corner.

Monι, do you have any suggestions or ideas? Afterall, you're a Firefox enthusiast and computer guru?

This is nuts!

Maybe this is the culprit.

Sorry to revive such an old thread. But I recently switched to Firefox full time (I had been using IE and Firefox for a few years). And I'm having exactly the same problem Mr. Thorne was having at that time. It won't save my damn password for this site. And this site only. Every other one is just fine.

Did anybody else experience this problem and finally figure out what the problem was?

all I can suggest Scott is go into tools
options
go to cookies
and add or have in cookies that are allowed

You might have to have both... not sure, but try that

I'm going with the flow.
