The nominations in this thread were entered in a poll,
which is now closed.

Here's a link to the thread:

Poll: What ECM albums do you MOST want "in print" on CD in your country? (http://speakeasy.jazzcorner.com/speakeasy/showthread.php?t=21870)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

A poll: why not? All forum readers are invited to nominate the five ECM albums they would most like to see reissued in their territory. I'll forward the results inside the ECM office.(That's from Steve's answer (http://speakeasy.jazzcorner.com/speakeasy/showpost.php?p=692304&postcount=155) to my question (http://speakeasy.jazzcorner.com/speakeasy/showpost.php?p=692118&postcount=154) in the Ask ECM thread.)

the original question could have been: "What haven't you got - ECM-wise - in your country which you would like to have??"(That's from a post of Steve's (http://speakeasy.jazzcorner.com/speakeasy/showpost.php?p=693480&postcount=29) in this thread.)

Albums nominated in this thread will be entered into a poll.

1. It doesn't matter whether an album has ever been issued on CD, as long as it's not "in print" on CD in your country.

2. New: In this thread, please nominate as many albums as you want!

3. There's no need for an album to be nominated more than once. I'm just sayin'.

Happy nominating!

a couple of suggestions for reissues:

The duoalbum with Derek Bailey and Dave Holland (can´t remember the title but I have it on a casette somewhere and it´s one of the best Bailey recordings I have heard).
Also Dave Liebman´s Lookout Farm and Music Improvisation Company (I have this both on vinyl and a japanese cd but it would be nice if more people will get the chance to hear this fine album).Yes, these would make a fitting tribute to Bailey from ECM.

I'll probably add a few more later, but here's a starting point. I enjoyed all of these immensely while working at KJZZ-FM in the 70's & 80's.

ECM 1012 - Underwear w/ Bobo Stenson, Arild Andersen & Jon Christensen (1971)
ECM 1039 - Lookout Farm w/ David Liebman et al (1973)
ECM 1040 - Seven Songs for Quartet and Chamber Orchestra w/ Gary Burton Quartet & members of the NDR Symphony Orchestra (1973)
ECM 1054 - Eon w/ Richie Bierach, Frank Tusa & Jeff Williams (1974)
ECM 1104 - Hubris w/ Richard Bierach (solo - 1977)
ECM 1106 - Desert Mauraders - Art Lande & Rubisa Patrol (1977)

The one album that stands out here for me is "Green Shading into Blue" by Arild Andersen Quartet. Not a single track you would skip. Also the songs are in perfect order flowing one into another. I ripped it from vinyl years ago and copied and reduced the front and back covers to make a home made cd and it sounds pretty good. But I would gladly buy a reissue.

"My area" is irrelevant, today. There's not a music store within an hour's drive in any direction I'd bother to even look in. So my vote is just to keep them "in print" so they can be had legit by people who want them.

For the purpose of this thread, it's the United States. For example, some of the albums are "in print" if you want to order them from Amazon's site for Japan (good luck with reading it, and enjoy paying the shipping cost).

In fact, that's what the Q&A between Steve Lake and me that prompted this thread was about. Steve has now posted about areas/territories/markets in this thread too--

I've heard Contrasts and I think it's one of Rivers' best, if not THE best I've heard by him.

lineup is:

Sam Rivers: Soprano and Tenor Saxophones, Flute
George Lewis: Trombone
Dave Holland: Bass
Thurman Barker: Drums, Marimba
Recorded December 1979 at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg.
Produced by Manfred Eicher.

I'll second or third or fourth that Marion Brown, too.

Hey Rita - let's just let folks name their faves until a big list is complied then count the votes for the number one (or the top five or ten) and pass on to Steve.Nitya--

Thanks. After a lot of thought, I concluded that the best way to give Steve Lake the input that he asked for would be to gather a list of albums, then put them into a poll. A poll will automatically "count the votes"--and automatically show which posters voted for the "winning" albums (and all the other albums), so we can give Steve a geographical breakdown.

As the new thread title indicates, each poster is now cordially invited to list an unlimited number of albums in this thread.

Rita, first of all, thanks for setting up this thread and volunteering to collate the results.

I'd like to suggest that before going any further you establish with Steve what he means by territories and then post a simple list so that people can chose from that list before they nominate their 5 albums.

My guess is that, like Gary said, territories make much less of a difference than they used to. People will probably nominate similar things and North America is much better represented than any other territory anyway; but if territories is what Steve wants ...

QUOTE]

Hi, am just leaving town for a week (but not to escape this thread!). Perhaps my formulation was too complex in the first place. Most of the distributors around the world buy their ECM albums as imports from ECM Export in Munich - these are the albums available from us at www.ecmrecords.com

The "licensed territiories", however, - including the USA, Japan and France have considerably less ECM titles available, via Universal. And the titles available are different in each territory.Still with me? The picture is further complicated by the fact that a handful of titles not carried by Universal are carried (as imports) by Forced Exposure in the US.

Since a bunch of titles are not available anywhere (either out of print or never on CD at all) and since I don't have the geographical/distributional whereabouts of all the albums in my head - the original question could have been: "What haven't you got - ECM-wise - in your country which you would like to have??"

I wish you all a peaceful resolution of the nominating process and look forward to reading what you come up with...

best
Steve

Thanks for giving this opportunity to voice our opinion.

This would be my top wishlist that are not out on CD to my knowledge:

1) Dave Liebman - Lookout Farm
2) Jack DeJohnette - Untitled (and/or New Rags)
3) John Abercrombie - M (and/or Quartet)
4) Arild Andersen - Clouds in My Head (or perhaps some sort of Arild box set like the Azimuth)
5) Everyman Band - s/t

And from JAPO, I'd love to see the rest of the Om catalog reissued someday, though that appears unlikely.

As far as items that are/were in print but nearly impossible to find in the USA: Bobo Stenson - Underwear, Edward Vesala - Nan Madol, & Michael Mantler - Hapless Child.

Thanks!

My picks:

Towner / Abercrombie - Five Years Later
Bobo Stenson - Underwear
Sam Rivers - Contrasts
John Abercrombie - M
Jack DeJohnette - New Rags and/or Untitled

There's a couple of Enrico Rava's from the late 70's that I've never actually heard (Ah and Opening Night). If they're on a par with his other ECM work, I'd certainly like to see those in print too.

And . . .

ECM 1124 - Non-Fiction w/ Steve Kuhn, Steve Slagle, Harvey Swartz & Bob Moses (1978)
ECM 1127 - Green Shading Into Blue w/ Arild Andersen Quartet (1978)
ECM 1142 - Elm w/ Richard Bierach, George Mraz & Jack DeJohnette (1979)

Rita-- i think Azimuth's individual releases (Azimuth/The Touchstones/Depart) has been repackaged into a single 3-cd box set so i doubt if they would re-issue it again separately. you can probably delete 1099, 1163 and 1130 and just retain 1546.

Tower Records online has never been problematic for me, but that's just me. The fact that their brick-and-mortar stores went away has no bearing on their online presence, really.

I wasn't tossing out the eBay auction for "the purposes of this thread", per se. It was, however, an indication that copies of Playing do exist out there. And, if this seller hadn't exhibited the Positive Feedback shown I wouldn't have bothered at all. I also noted the end date of the auction and the fact that there was no Buy It Now option. If I were that seller, I wouldn't have offered that either. At least, not for 12 bucks. ;) I also noted that the shipping charge is not outrageous.

Ron--

Thanks. Well, shoot, then; I probably will try to order Old and New Dreams from Tower.com.

I realized that the "Buy It Now" option, if any, disappears if an eBay item gets at least one bid (that is, if bids are being allowed). So maybe that auction for Playing had a "Buy It Now" option when it began.

In terms of my personal quest, I never bid on or buy eBay items that aren't located in the United States. I personally just don't want to, no matter how well that's worked out for others. Thank you, though!

(Edit: In my personal quest for the two O&ND albums on ECM, I ran into some snags, which I described to Ron privately.)

Thanks, Randy. When I do an update, I'll add any albums that aren't already on this chart:

POLL NOMINATIONS from Posts # 1 - 43 (http://speakeasy.jazzcorner.com/speakeasy/showpost.php?p=694867&postcount=45)

Any more nominations, folks? I'm hoping that we can take the poll before people get too busy with the holidays.

Edit: The poll also includes albums nominated in posts # 44 - 61.

I've long carried a torch for -

Jack DeJohnette - Inflation Blues
Barre Phillips - Call Me When You Get There

These two gems hail from the early 80s, an era that seems to have slipped under the reissue radar by & large (Dewey's date excepted)

The nominations in this thread were entered in a poll,
which is now closed.
