For the 8th year, Montreal Festival Brings Music to the People.
The Suoni Per Il Popolo 2008 Festival Announces
First Confirmed Artists.
Montreal, Quebec, CANADA (February 1st, 2008). Montreal’s Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival (Sounds For The People Festival), one of North America’s largest and most diverse avant garde and experimental music festivals, is proud to announce that its eighth annual edition will run from Sunday, June 1 to Sunday, June 29, 2008.
Confirmed highlights include Wilco’s Nels Cline, Tortoise’s Jeff Parker and John Herndon who will perform with Ken Vandermark in Powerhouse Sound, returning legends Sun Ra Arkestra, and brothers Sir Richard Bishop and Alan Bishop who will play one of their first concerts of Sun City Girls’ music since the untimely death of their late great drummer, Charles Gocher, as well as their own stellar sets.
Other notable musicians on this year’s roster include Table of the Elements guitarist Loren Connors, ex-Hüsker Dü member Grant Hart, underground folk icon Michael Hurley, Tim Hecker, storied folkman Vic Chestnutt, Carla Buzolich’s Evangelista, local heroes A Silver Mt. Zion, avant rock duo Magik Markers, and Phil Elverum's mysterious Mt. Eerie project.
As usual, the festival will feature a stellar roster of free jazz artists including William Hooker with Glen Hall and Dominic Duval, Hard Cell featuring Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Thom Rainey, Matana Roberts Sextet featuring Hill Greene, pianist Shoko Nagai, the trio of Evan Parker, Barry Guy, and Paul Lytton, living legend trombonist Roswell Rudd in a rare duo setting with bassist Mark Dresser, and founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Roscoe Mitchell.
This year’s edition will also feature a special large ensemble series entitled ‘And the Band Played On’ that will feature a performance by the Rainer Wiens Ensemble of Terry Riley’s ‘In C’, Nicolas Caloia's Ratchet Orchestra, Christof Migone's Hit Parade and a new piece by Sam Shalabi. The fifth edition of the Independent Label Series will once again feature an exciting range of artists from local and international independent record labels.
