I couldn't start thread under festivals. All locked up.
Portland Jazz Fest is from February 15-24. Cecil, Ornette, Myra Melford, Tim Berne, Dave Douglas, Joe Lovano and more. I'll be there the first weekend. Would be nice to have a JC hang.

Same here, Cem. I can't make it. Drat!

Kicking it off with both Cecil and Ornette is quite the coup. Whoever booked this fest deserves a Nobel Prize, man.

I'd love to Cem, but won't be able to make it, either.

They've really made fantastic advances in very short order with the caliber of talent and the graphics and supporting infrastructure for this festival. I'm very impressed.

By the way, some events are already sold out! The lineup this year is stellar.

I know it'll be a blast, barring any injury or catastrophe, even then... my first time seeing Cecil!!
Too bad none of you can be there. I thought Bill, for sure, would've.
Thanks for the heads up on near sell-outs, Ron. I just snagged 2 Cecil tix, just in case. I plan on getting a pass for me and friend during the week.

Also, -it's my thread and I can derail it, if I want to- a heads up for Ron and other Alaskans; my friend Latif Bolat will be playing out there in April. Here's his website (http://latifbolat.com/concert-tour.php). He's a great singer of Sufi music and a fine saz player. As well, he's a scholar of Sufism and Turkish music and history. His shows are peppered with poetry, slides and great stories. Don't miss him!

Yeah, I'm a little bummed that I can't make it, Cem. You're in for an experience... I've only heard Cecil in performance twice myself. And both times were memorable. The first was with the Unit back in the 1980s at Dartmouth College and the second was solo at FIMAV on the bill with Marilyn Crispell and Paul Plimley/Jon Oswald (the concert that was released on Victo as Complicité.)

Thanks, Cem. I'll make a note to try to catch Latif, for sure.

I see that he'll be performing on April 19th at the University of Alaska Anchorage (where the Dobie Losben Memorial Jazz Collection is housed), which is about :05mins from our home. Cool.

I am going green with envy. Half the board is talking about great stuff in Europe and the other half about great stuff in the Pacific North West (love Portland and Bend). Here I am stuck in Chicago with snow and everything else on hold for a month. I 've been invited to Minneapolis though. I wish I could make the Portland festival. Looks great.

I'll not be there in Portland, but had a nice treat after seeing Cedar Walton Sextet at Yoshi's/SF

Steve Turre is on Cedar's band this week, and after the show, came out to visit with friends; among them Robin Eubanks, and Stefon Harris[SF Jazz Collective members], and Karen Kennedy (manager for Stefon, Kenny Baron and more). They're all happily looking forward to the Portland dates.

Hi Eric, I pm'd you my cell & email. We're going to every ticketed show and most artist talks this weekend, except Classical Jazz Quartet (sold out) & Bill Charlap. Before Ornette there may be some time for drinks or dinner. Let me know, what you think.

Bluebrew, wish you could be there. I'd feel for you, if I didn't know, what goes on in Chicago. :) It's a happening place, musically.

hornplayer, thanks for the rec. I'll try & check out Vesta's, in Vancouver, WA. Contintal fare? Spendy? I can't check the menu on their website, keeps crashing my browser.

Thanks Cem. Usually we have a lot of action here but February is always a slow month and the streets are miserable. This is an exceptionally bad winter. But hey...it'll all be over soon. Wish I could have a drink with you guys but it's not happening this time so have one on me and have a great time.

Cem -- If you're going to be there Sunday, check out my pals the Freak Mountain Ramblers at Laurelthirst. Bass player's an old pal going back to the 70s and the only one I care to play with. It's a pretty good party, every week. People call it "Church," as in going to church.

I checked out bad plus/cecil/ornette and spanish harlem orchestra

The bad plus were fantastic. They've got a really good combination of showmanship and musically. They're often very funny. Drummer is ridiculous.

I liked ornette, interesting line up 3 bassists although one was in a guitar-like role. Wish I could have been closer, sounded fairly boomy. It was the first time I've seen someone get a standing ovation for just showing up. Same with cecil.

Cecil was actually more subdued than I thought he would be. Some really beautiful quiet moments. He read some poetry which really through me off guard. it was....interesting.

I went to the jam session afterwards, robin eubanks sat in. He was wearing shiny black pants. Also charnett moffett (sp?) played and tore it up. Incredible upright chops

Drove down to Portland with my honey. Stayed with good friends, had some great food, got a $250 seat-belt/speeding ticket, met some good people and heard some incredible music.

Ornette was great! Better than the Carnegie Hall show I attended with Gera & Pete, almost 2 years ago. Sound was shoddy again. Denardo & Al McDowell were barely audible from where we sat. 2 electric basses against a double bass worked better, imo.

In response to James Hale's comments on his blog (http://jazzchronicles.blogspot.com/2008/02/2008-portland-jazz-festival.html), I found the SF Jazz Collective, both the playing & the writing, much more compelling than he did, it seems. Maybe, I had better seats. It was not the most adventurous thing I heard, but well executed, nevertheless.

Myra Melford's band was outstanding, much more happening than when a similar line-up played JCC in Vancouver 4-5 years ago(?). Her harmonium playing has improved greatly. She's a monster pianist, imo. It's still not her killer trio, but moving stuff...

Hard Cell was amazing! Tim Berne is someone I've come to start really appreciating for the past few years. I tried real hard for 15 years, but found his writing & playing too.... loopy, swirling, kind of like Evan Parker's playing, but Evan I dug from the first note on. Go, figure... Now, whenever I get a chance to hear Tim in any situation, I'm there. I was a little concerned about Gerald Cleaver sitting in my man Tom Rainey's throne and Craig Taborn playing piano, instead of the Rhodes or some such, where he shines, imo. Craig's piano playing, though I admire it, has kinda left me cold in the past. I've heard him with James Carter, Susie Ibarra & Jennifer Choi, Marty Ehrlich & others. Was I ever wrong!! It was as if he anticipated or was super-inspired by Cecil's presence in the area... his playing was bold, sublime, ferocious, awesome! Cleaver is his own man, a very inventive one at that. He's got a completely different vocabulary than Rainey does. Where Rainey cannot not swing (which to me is a good thing, too), Cleaver accesses more of that free European thing and does his thing really well. I guess, it's true what they say about one of the signs of a good band, how it responds to another good drummer and sounds very different, but very good. Berne was in top form, playing his own impossibly beautiful compositions so fluidly and with much heart, unlike how I perceived his playing as too cerebral in the past. I think, he'd had it with all the chatter from his involvement in at least 3 artist talks, was ready to communicate through his horn. Quite the memorable evening.

On a sour note, I couldn't stand the Bad Plus. I'd never heard them before. Kinda like Medeski, Martin & Wood with no soul or groovy feel. Not my thing.

Cecil was outstanding! He has not lost his fire one bit, nor his vision or sharp artistry, both as pianist and poet. I wish it was in a more intimate setting, but I doubt that it's possible anymore (it was in the ballroom of the Mariott). I can now die a happy man -after I hear Braxton live, that is...

All in all, a very fun weekend! I wish, I got to meet some JC'ers.

Jealous. Portland's in my top three favorite cities: New York, Montreal, Portland.

Cem
February-20th-2008, 07:01 PM
Gary, me too! I've been saying that to people as future possibilities. Problem is, New York & Portland are in the US, where I'm not sure I wanna live. To live in Montreal one should probably speak French and their winters are brutal. So far, I'm still enjoying the bush. If someone made me an offer to run a good venue in one of those those towns, I could be tempted. Food and live music alone are reasons enough to...

Portland has a big city vibe without most of the big city hassles. And, it has one of the hippest, cleanest public transportation setups in the nation.

I love Seattle, too, but it's gotten so huge in the past couple of decades that some of its charm has been lost, I'm afraid.

All in all, a very fun weekend! I wish, I got to meet some JC'ers.
I failed to mention; after this post, Stuckinagroove pm'd me and lo & behold we did meet, unbeknownst to both of us! We were sitting next to each other at Cecil and chatted some before and at the break. After the show, I saw him outside and gave him my card, which I had got printed the day we arrived in Portland (I'd run out a couple of years ago :))... I spoke with dozens of people, but it appears, I gave cards to 3 people: Tim Berne, Myra Melford &... Stuck! haahaaa...

Celebrating First Major Label Recording
<!-- Article :: Content --> http://www.pdxjazz.com/images/2008/newsletters/esperanza_200x330.jpg Every few years, a new artist comes along with talent and potential so great that it challenges and redefines the common perceptions of what jazz is and where it's heading. The new light on the horizon may be a compelling vocalist one year, or perhaps an unmatched instrumental virtuoso a few years later, or maybe a brilliant composer a few more years down the road.
Bassist/vocalist/composer Esperanza Spalding is all of these things and more. And she will, in fact, challenge and expand your perceptions of jazz.
Her accelerated backstory follows a breathtaking arc. A musical prodigy since her childhood in Portland, Oregon, Esperanza enrolled at Berklee College of Music at 16 and not only excelled there but eventually became the youngest professor in the school's history. Before finishing school, she had already landed coveted touring gigs and recording projects with the likes of Patti Austin, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny and other luminaries who were, in many cases, the shining lights of their own generations.
In celebration, PDX Jazz will bring home Esperanza Spalding to Portland on Saturday, June 14, 8:00 PM, at the Winningstad Theater at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, 1111 SW Broadway, for the official launch of her new album with a national CD Release Party.

<!-- Article :: Content -->http://www.pdxjazz.com/images/2008/newsletters/quincy_jones_pjo.jpgThe Portland Jazz Orchestra presents an all-ages performance pairing the large ensemble repertoires of music impresario/jazz whiz Quincy Jones alongside charts by virtuoso guitarist and band leader Pat Metheny (arr. Bob Curnow). Both immensely popular and prolific, the two have earned an impressive combined total of 44 Grammy awards.
While both composers are known for innovation and creativity, the concert's program is fresh and casual-Curnow's revered arrangements of Metheny's charts feature groovy mixed meters alongside gorgeous, sweeping melodies, while Jones conceals his demand for technical expertise in vibrant tunes of swing and bop-ultimately inviting a pleasurable listening experience to jazz fans of any persuasion.

<!-- Article :: Content -->At the Bellevue Jazz Festival, Branford Marsalis and I had an extended and spirited conversation about the state of jazz. Branford is outspoken about how young artists are being pushed into becoming leaders before their time by what's left of the recording industry, jazz radio, and all of us-the jazz consumers. We're doing an outstanding job of training the new generation of younger musicians, who in turn are developing skills far beyond their years.
As our culture keeps emphasizing what's new, these young artists are often thrust into the spotlight without the benefit of maturity, and the long term, career mortality rate is alarming. Let's hearken back to the late 80's when the term Young Lions was in vogue, and which centered around the Marsalis siblings. For every Branford, Wynton, Terence Blanchard, and Josh Redman, there have been others who have faded from view after early jump starts. Marlon Jordan, Rick Margitza, Ryan Kisor, and Charles Fambrough-all accomplished players-each came to mind as Branford spoke.
As we sat in the backstage green room, I found myself making eye contact with one of my all time favorite pianists, Joey Calderazzo, who is now a vital member of Branford's famed quartet. In the early 90's, Joey made three classic albums on Blue Note and then became less visible as a sideman on a variety of projects. Happily, Joey is back with a new album on Branford's own label, Marsalis Music, and again making superb musical choices. Branford recently stopped giving private lessons to a promising young talent because (in Branford's opinion) they stopped growing, stopped risking, and became content with floating. Jazz is a fragile commodity, and sometimes we need to realize that younger artists need time to transition from sophisticated skill sets to a mature musical vision.
For some, like Joey, they come full circle, while others fade from memory only to be regrettably rediscovered in used CD shops.

Stuck! haahaaa...

That story is a trip, Cem. I almost don't believe you.

Crazy, but true. Haven't heard from stuck since. Honey and I parted ways since. It was a memorable weekend, nonetheless.
