First Year the DEJF Will Present Two Full and FREE
Days of Jazz on The National Mall October 4-5
[September 17: Washington , DC ] Today the Duke Ellington Jazz Festival (DEJF) announced some changes and exciting additions to the lineup of the 4th annual festival October 1-7. Festival founder and executive producer, Charles Fishman, also announced the Lifetime Achievement Award honoree. The DEJF is a highly anticipated event in the nations capital for its impressive mix of local, national and international artists and its presentation of over 100 programs and performances at more than 40 diverse venues in different neighborhoods of Washington , DC . A hallmark of the DEJF is the all-day free concert on the National Mall, which last year attracted more than 25,000 people. The DEJFs mission is to expose the broadest demographic to jazz; use jazz as a form of arts education; honor DCs own Duke Ellington and other jazz greats; and add to the citys rich jazz history by entertaining thousands with local and world-class jazz talent.
1) *NEA Jazz Masters Concert on October 4 to Feature Duke Ellington Orchestra for the First Time. The annual NEA Jazz Masters concert presented by the DEJF will feature the Duke Ellington Orchestra with special guest, Paquito DRivera, who serves as artistic advisor to the DEJF. Also joining the Duke Ellington Orchestra as special guests will be local sax legends, Buck Hill and George Botts and vocalist Sharon Clark, who will perform separately with her quintet. Michael Bowie and his DC Bass Choir will open the concert with internationally-renowned bassist, Christian McBride, as special guest. *Note: Ramsey Lewis had to withdraw from the festival due to personal reasons.
2) Jazz Impresario George Wein to Receive the DEJF Lifetime Achievement Award. After intermission of the NEA Jazz Masters Concert on October 4, the DEJF will present its Lifetime Achievement Award to jazz impresario George Wein, founder of Festival Productions (now the Festival Network). Commented Fishman, First George Wein is a jazz pianist and a lifelong lover of jazz. But professionally, hes been the pivotal force promoting jazz around the world through the festival circuit he created. We are proud to honor his enduring legacy. Also being honored is saxophonist Roger Buck Hill , a Washington , DC , living legend who has been dazzling audiences in the greater Washington area for over 40 years.
3) The DEJF Presents Its First Concert at 930 Club, One of 34 Venues Participating in the DEJFs Jazz in the Hoods Nighttime Series This year marks the first time that the DEJF will present a concert at the nationally-regarded 930 Club. Fishman noted, This is a great occasion for us as we continue to expand the number of partner venues we have here in Washington , DC . The 930 Club is one of the most outstanding clubs in the country, and our concert there with Baltimores Fertile Ground, DCs Chopteeth and the Latin all-star band, La Timbistica, promises to be a highlight of the festival. When the DEJF premiered in 2005, eleven clubs and restaurants presented jazz. This year, the number of participating partner venues has more than tripled to 34 clubs, restaurants, hotels and galleries, one third of which are in the historic U Street Corridor. Included are Bohemian Caverns, Busboys and Poets, Twins, Utopia, The Islander and Jo Jos. High-end restaurant venues include Cashions Eat Place, Georgia Browns, Johnnys Half-Shell, Blues Alley and Proof. Peformances will be presented in all four quadrants of the city. 4) Jazz n Families Fun Day Moved to The National Mall / The DEJF Now Offers Full Weekend of Free, Great Music on The Mall from October 4-5. One of the few jazz festivals in the world to have a program officially dedicated to families, the DEJF decided to combine all of its Jazz n Families Fun Day concerts and activities into one event to be held at the Sylvan Amphitheater on The National Mall. With this change, the DEJF is now offering two free and full days of outstanding jazz on The National Mall, also known as America s lawn. Jazz n Families Fun Day is Saturday, October 4, from 12-6pm and will be headlined by the Louisville Leopard Percussionists, a band of 7 to 12-year-olds who have been featured on HBO. The event is an extension of the DEJFs educational outreach program, which will directly reach more than 2,000 District children this year through student concerts, master classes and other activities. The next day, October 5, will be the DEJFs free, annual all-day Jazz on the National Mall extravaganza from 12-7:30pm.
