Why?
I think it would be a more interesting place with something from the silent members!

There are 30 members listed on the 1st page of the members' roster. Of those 30 members, 11 of them have not posted any private info, except possibly e-mail addresses. I understand the need to be private, but it'd be interesting to see where the rest are from and what they do.

Let's hope that it wasn't because they were having problems getting "board privileges" once they'd registered, which is what happened to some of us--only we were still able to cry for help on the old board.

Lurkers, the silent majority! I have a friend who lurks regularly but isn't even registered. Sometimes he continues a thread debate with me by email. When I urge him to participate in the board itself, he demurs. The registered lurkers are the tip of the iceberg.

fwiw (and i've brought this up before) I'd post a lot more if I didn't have to log in every time I try to post when I use IE. In fact, the last few times I tried post in IE, after I logged in for the third or fourth time immediately prior to posting, I got a "no thread specified" message, so maybe I can't even post in IE anymore. I really hate Netscape, so mostly I browse in IE and then switch to Netscape to post. I also had this problem with the old board and didn't speak up because I figured no one would be able to help me on account of the glitchy software. About a week ago, I brought it up here and the only advice offered was to make sure I had the "automaticallly log-in" option clicked on, which I did, so no dice there.

It's fantastically annoying.

Assuming Chris is using IE...

On your browser at the top select Tools, than Internet Options and
click the Security tab.

Click on "Trusted Sites" (the green circle with the checkmark) and
then click the "Sites" button below it.

Uncheck the "Require server verification (https:)" button if it's
checked, and add "www.jazzcornertalk.com" to the "Add this Website to
the Zone" field. Then click "Add".

Click "OK." Then click "OK" again.

Close all of your browser windows, then re-open one and try logging
onto JC.

I count myself among the silent minority on this site mainly because I feel that I can learn more from keeping my mouth shut and listening to more knowledgable people like yourself.

I have always liked jazz but have only started to make an effort to learn about it and buy music within the past few years. As a result I don't think that my opinions would really add all that much to the quality of the discussion here.

I'm just glad that I have found this site, it has taken my listening to areas that I may never have discovered on my own.

I assume that many of the other lurkers here don't contribute for similar reasons.

Actually since I am relatively new to jazz I don't find it hard to sit back and let others take the lead. As for the rest of my life, I have been referred to as an arrogant know-it-all more than once (quite rightly too I might add), so I don't claim any moral high ground.

As for recent purchases, I recently bought Joe Lovano's trio fascination vol 2 (listening to that right now as a matter of fact), Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Roy Hargrove's directions in jazz (I believe that is the title) and I would be buying Wayne Shorter's most recent output but I have yet to find it in a music store around here. The music stores in my area are quite poor in terms of selection and I haven't yet tried any of the on-line sources. That has tended to limit what I can get my hands on.

Which albums/jazz musicians have you been excited about? Btw, I recommend checking out the "Rave About Your Favorite Musicians" thread. You don't have to know much about jazz; you just have to be enthusiastic about a particular jazz musician.

Also, in the past, we used to have a lot of threads giving recommendations to jazz beginners. Would that be something you would like to see?

There are three principal reasons for my not posting on a more regular base:

(1) time delays in getting into the threads. I don't know if it's due to the individual slowness of my computer or to the specific properties of the Speakeasy site, and time will tell if the problem will be as serious on the new board as it was on the old. Sometimes it took me considerably longer than just a few minutes to view the most recent posts in voluminous threads like "What are you listening to". It was virtually impossible for me to keep track of those threads, let alone to contribute to them.

(2) language problems. OK, I finally manage to write statements (like this one) in decent English, and hopefully all you other members (including native speakers) understand anything what I'm trying to say. But at times it takes an unreasonably long time for me to make up posts (like this one).

(3) lack of theoretical background. Unlike a great portion of Speakeasy members, I never learned to play any musical instrument, so I'm listening to music as a complete amateur with completely amateurish viewpoints. That's very much the point Claude (with whom I share those unlovely "arrogance references") expressed in his first post. However, I'd die for listening to creative music, which may be quite an uplifting experience. Regularly visiting Speakeasy (though not regularly posting) at times is very stimulating reading and helps me forming and consolidating my own opinions.

(2) and (3) in combination often cause me to restrict my contributions to informational posts about new and forthcoming CD releases and to hope those might be of interest for at least some of you.

Far's slowness of the board goes, try this: Click on user cp above. Go to "edit options. " Scroll down to "style set." You'll see a drop down menu that allows you to choose a "lofi " version of the new board. It's a *lot* faster for people with archaic connections. Like me.

thanks a lot for your words of encouragement! 't is a kind of feedback which is quite important for me on a personal level. It adds to the impression I experienced when I first got into Speakeasy some two years ago - the impression that I'm in good (and not so small) company with my musical tastes.

I don't really know much about the artists...I mainly just play...I started because my teacher needed a tenor sax in one of our jazz bands...he just kind of threw it at me, but I'm really enjoying it now! It was really nice to find a place where there are other people who like it too, most people I know don't, they actually consider me a bit wierd to like jazz.........strange people, all of 'em....
