I am very happy to announce the release of my new book “Talk Jazz”. The book is the culmination of close to 20 years of studying and teaching the very effective method which Barry Harris has developed and used since the 1950’s.

The book contains 10 chapters of studies, designed to give the student and/or professional musician an in depth understanding of the harmonic vehicles and melodic language used by the masters of bebop.

The book will:
-Develop the student's technique.
-Expand their vocabulary of jazz phrases.
-Broaden their understanding of harmony.
-Help them gain an in-depth knowledge of their instrument.

All the studies in this book are based on jazz phrases. This will eliminate the endless time students practice scales without an understanding of how to apply them.
The play along CD that accompanies the book will let the student hear what these studies/phrases sound like, and offer him or her the opportunity to play them with a swinging rhythm section.
With me on the CD are Tardo Hammer on piano, Earl May on bass and Leroy Williams on drums.

The book is available in two editions. An edition for all instruments and vocalist, which offers the studies in one key, and a guitar edition, where the exercises presented have been fingered specifically for the guitarist, with both fingerboard diagrams and fingerings for every note being played, in all 12 keys.

As a teacher, I’m constantly made aware of the difficulties guitar players have in determining how to properly finger the types of melodic and harmonic material dealt with in Talk Jazz.
I am hopeful that this book will wipe away this mystery and be an ongoing resource that will open up the musician’s ears, give them a clear method from which to work, and further unlock the inner musician that lies within their passion for greater creativity.

Hi Valerie,
Thank you for the good word.
Walter was a great inspiration to me through out my musical development. I was fortunate to hear him play live many times at the Jazz Cultural Theater, but not fortunate enough to play with him. His music lives forever.
Best,
Roni
