Doesn't FV understand they've got something special with those guys?!? http://www.fvrec.com/rope/rope.jpg

Man, I hear you. But it ain't FV, it's Rope. Those boys are finicky!

Apparently the recording (with Steve Albini) went very, very well - Darin Gray actually plays some piano, Belcher plays sop on a track or two, and there is (I think) a violist or something. Robert told me they were channeling the Komeda influence.

Summer is what I heard for a release date. The title is "Widow's First Dawn." Rock!!!

Excellent! I have to say, I'm as excited about their release as about any other musical thing I can think of.

Of course, I'd like to hear that Carter opera an awful lot too.

Plain English for the uninitiated, please...

Sorry Dennis. Rope is this very strange and wonderful (indescribable by me--maybe Jason can manage it) Polish group I heard live in Mass. a while back. They have one disc out on Family Vineyard, but it doesn't nearly do them justice. I've been eagerly awaiting their next one.

Dennis, these cats went out on tour with the UE and Darin Gray last summer. They're a trio - their disc would get filed in the "rock" section - two guys from Poland and a drummer from southern Illinois. They sound like early Swans crossed with Komeda crossed with Slint. Very long, cinematic pieces with beautiful melodies, hushed but intense lyrics, and lots of reverberating noises and rhythms. Enough dissonance and complexity to satisfy too.

I think they are completely amazing, and I love them as people too. Their EP is good but is just the guitar/bass (and vocals) duo, so it is not at all representative of what they're up too now.

I think you - and maybe especially Aaron and Stefan - would dig the hell out of these guys.

As soon as I saw the response to my question, I showed it to Aaron, and he immediately jumped on the computer to see what he could find out about them...thanks for the explanation!

I'm resurrecting this thread because I just heard "Widow's First Dawn" last week, and I can't stop playing it. Awesome!

I'm not sure what to call it. It's like rock or something.
