(Smog) is the moniker of singer/songwriter Bill Callahan
(so hold those jokes).

I think he's the most emotionally articulate songwriter since Leonard Cohen, a guy who's really created his own thing, and deserves much more recognition. His latest record "Supper" has
garnered some nice reviews in WIRE and the Dusted Magazine website among others.

If you don't know his music, and you like "indie" rock/pop/alt country (whatever you want to call it), you should check out (Smog). This guy writes and sings songs that can just unnerve you and make you laugh aloud because they're so directly honest and knowing.

Know of any online samples floating around? His label Drag City offers none.

I'm not overly fond of "lo-fi", as AMG references, but I'll listen.

I Kazaa'd "I Was a Stranger" from Red Apples Fall - as I feared, a bit too high a song/music ratio for me. I'm not lyrics-oriented enough to let good lyrics with imo sparse musical content bolster my listening interest sufficiently - otoh, if the music's good, I often don't care how stupid the lyrics are. :)

vince,

he's way past lo-fi these days and has been working with horn and string arrangements and even a children's choir. He's worked recently with Jim O'Rourke, guys from Tortoise, Steve Albini, etc. He had a song placed on the High Fidelity soundtrack that's pretty representative of where he's at.

try downloading that song "Cold-Blooded Old Times"
