Raynier Institute & Foundation & Mountain Village Metro Services August 6-8, 2004 - Telluride, Colorado

Since 1977 Telluride’s majestic perch - high in the spectacular San Juan mountains in SW Colorado - has been the site of a musical odyssey combining the finest of nature and art. Each year the Telluride Society for Jazz produces one of the most memorable festivals in the world. Its intimate format and opportunities for pleasure are beyond the superb music - hiking, mountain jeep tours, visits to mining ghost towns, biking and more - bring an audience of up to 3,000 per day to this historic, one-of-a-kind Victorian town seen by most Americans only in TV commercials. Combining outdoor stages during the day with theater and club shows running at night, this festival is not to be missed. The Telluride Jazz Celebration is the perfect family getaway. This year features:

Larry Coryell is appearing as the “Guest of Honor”
Larry is a groundbreaking musician, special in the history of jazz. He has brought a nearly alien sensibility to the guitar with a unique tone, phrasing and note bending owing as much to blues, rock and even country as it did to earlier bop influences. He is armed with a brilliant technique, comfortable in every style. Larry was a huge hit in last year’s Celebration playing with pure passion and jamming with everyone in sight. It’s our pleasure and honor to name this year’s stage the ”Larry Coryell Stage”.

Medeski Martin & Wood:
John Medeski (Piano/B3 /Keyboards), Billy Martin (Drums/Percussion) and Chris Wood (Bass) began as a New York City based coffeehouse trio in 1991. By 1995, MM&W were selling more and more records and attracting more fans everywhere they went, from every corner of the US, to Europe and Japan. Now they are one of Blue Note Record’s hottest artists in great demand all over the world. They were named in Downbeat Magazine’s 2003 Annual Critics Pole as “Best Electric Group”.

Leon Russell:
2001 GRAMMY™ winner, legendary singer, songwriter, pianist Leon Russell, has achieved much throughout his stellar musical career, including releasing 4 gold albums and having two top-40 singles as a solo artist. In addition, Leon has played with some of the most memorable names in recent pop music history, including Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys and others. He just recently completed a PBS Special with Ray Charles.

The Caribbean Jazz Project:
Called a “distinctly refreshing and eminently danceable Latin jazz” group by the Washington Post, the Caribbean Jazz Project is a vibrant and unique mixture of jazz, Afro-Cuban and South American music. Conceived by Dave Samuels, the group won the 2003 GRAMMY™ Award for Best Latin Jazz CD. They are the act to catch at this year’s Telluride Jazz Celebration.

Kurt Elling:
Six-time GRAMMY™ nominee Kurt Elling is a powerful musician. He is the winner of both Readers and Critics Downbeat Magazine poles for 2003 for “Best Male Vocalists”. He is able to breathe life, in all its complexities, into the music. It is this mastery of the jazz vocalism that led the Chicago Tribune to proclaim, “Elling invented new rules for the singer’s art, even as he set about breaking them.”

Flora Purim & Airto:
There’s nothing safe about Purim & Airto’s performances. Flora is a 2-time GRAMMY™ nominee and 4-time winner of Down Beat Magazine’s Best Female Jazz Vocalist is gifted with a voice that is capable of astoundingly soaring riffs and percussive out-bursts. Airto has been the reigning percussionist on this planet for
close to 30 years. Having performed with artists like Miles Davis, Stan Getz, and Chick Corea and Weather Report, these two incredible artists are true pathfinders.

Chris Potter:
Chris Potter got his chops while learning with the giants of jazz. Now an accomplished musician himself, he received a GRAMMY™ nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Solo for his work on Joanne Brackeen’s “Pink Elephant Magic.” He is the youngest recipient of the prestigious Danish Jazzpar Prize. Chris was named “Best Rising Star” on tenor in Downbeat’s 2003 Critics pole.

Richie Cole Quintet with Steve Nygaard
The personable and irrepressible inventor of “Alto Madness” is the only jazz musician to garner the “Key to the City” of Telluride. Richie reveals an extraordinary talent for refusing to acknowledge ‘musical barriers’ showing influences from Eddie Jefferson to Aaron Copeland. The inspiring trumpet of Steve Nygaard joins him, with Kenny Walker–bass, Hod O’Brien-piano, and Dick Berk-drums.

Cloud Nine
This Ann Arbor-based septet has an addictive blend of jazz – tinged hip-hop, fueled by the seductive commanding vocals of Jamie Register. Cloud Nine is: Ryan Stoko on keyboards, Sam Monroe on bass, Dan Piccolo on drums, Ben Poker on trumpet, Justin Brewer on percussion and Dave Luther on tenor. Tellluride is pleased to see them back.

Young Razzcals Jazz Project:
These incredible musicians of 10 to 15 years old were based in Albuquerque, N.M. Now they hail from Virginia Beach, Vi. are directed by the amazing Dave Adams. Over ten years ago, the group was heard on the sidewalks of Telluride and since have often performed in Telluride and cut several CDs with the likes of Richie Cole, Bobby Shew and Steve Nygaard. They raise the roof in Telluride every time.

*The Telluride Student Jazz All Stars:
*National talent search. *Scholarship Workshop. *Concerts. Students 13 and up participate from August 2-6. Directed by renowned trumpeter, educator and Yamaha clinician Bob Montgomery.
