Even though I don't like my only V5 CD that much ("Acoustic Machine"), I loved their mix of free jazz and arrangements (brawn & brain, so to speak), their energy, the diversity of the repertoire (from Kirk to Giuffre to Ayler to a beautiful ballad). Dave Rempis was a revelation.

I, too, was blown away by my first live Vandermark 5 experience. The contrast brought about by Vandermark and Rempis - the latter having a much more piercing tone, a more organized/tidier approach and playing more on the beat, was quite instrumental to sustaining my interest throughout the set.

At this point, I hope to see enough concerts this year to actually come up with a top ten list that is a result of some pruning.

For some reason, I've been going to a lot of concerts this month. So far, I've seen 22 concerts in 2004 and should be adding number 23 tonight.

Only been to one set so far in 04 but it may have been one of the best concerts I have EVER dug.Kem at Winston Salem State University earlier this month.Last he came out with a disc call "Kemistry" and was my #2 disc of 03.But after continued listening it has now move into my top 10 alltime albums.He is a Al Jearreu , DeAngelo type singer with Steve Wonder lyric writing skills.His band was tight and he jammed the roof off the mutha.Going to hit several of the sets during The Piedmont Jazzfest end of April,First of May but Kem has set the bar mighty high.Peace and all that.

I'm hoping the upcoming festival in Athens, GA (see the Festivals section) will be able to go up there. Other than that, I really haven't seen much music in 2004 yet. If someone could point me to some good shows in the area, maybe I could rectify that....

Did you really find Abaton that good? The Hill concert really made me think, but I still don't know how much or how little I enjoyed it.

I'm not much thrill by her work on her own CD (but on the Walto rec., yes!).

The only one I've kept so far is her "Pentacle" CD on Sketch because of the marvellous trumpet of Jean-Luc Capozzo who steal the show.

I've always been disappointed by her trio's records with Rogers & Levine.
And I wasn't anymore interesting by what she could do as a leader, until...

... I saw the concert from the "Pentacle" band at the Bruges Festival.
It was good in itself (much living than on the record) AND the solo of piano Sophia took in the middle of the concert was absolutely astonishing/groundbreaking, whatever superlative you can find.
Rarely heard such a thing even from the greatest (Taylor, Bley, Hill, Burrell, Rosen, whatever).

So, my conclusion is that her CDs are not up to her real talent until today.

But, now, I'm waiting impatiently for the next on, just hoping that it will be recorded live. Because, the girl can play.
