JAZZ GREATS ROBIN EUBANKS AND JOSHUA REDMAN HEADLINE THE 2004 RENO JAZZ FESTIVAL

Some of the best jazz musicians and educators in the world travel to Reno, Nevada, each spring to perform and teach at the Reno Jazz Festival, during three days of concerts, competitions and jazz clinics for students and professionals alike. This year, Robin Eubanks — named five times as No. 1 Trombonist of the Year — will help kick off the festival, which runs April 22-24, on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Also appearing in concert will be premier saxophonist Joshua Redman. Festival competitions and educational clinics featuring student performers and guest adjudicators are held throughout the day, Friday and Saturday, April 22-23 at several campus locations.

Robin Eubanks and the university's own jazz ensemble, The Collective, kick off the festival Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. in Nightingale Concert Hall on the university campus. Born into what some have called Philadelphia’s first family of jazz, critically acclaimed trombonist Robin Eubanks has been surrounded by music — and music luminaries — from day one. On the faculty of Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and as an award-winning performer, he has revolutionized trombone technology with sound-altering electronics, putting his music squarely in the future of jazz. Named “No. 1 Trombonist of the Year” in the International Critics’ Poll four years straight, 1989-1992, and again in 1995 in Down Beat’s poll, he has worked with an impressive list of notables: with J.J. Johnson on his Grammy-nominated recording, “The Brass Orchestra,” as music director for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, with McCoy Tyner’s Big Band, the Mingus Band, the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, and Barbara Streisand on her historic 1994 tour. Eubanks has also worked with his brothers, Duane Eubanks, a gifted trumpeter and Kevin Eubanks, guitarist and bandleader of the “Tonight Show,” as part of his own band, Mental Images.

Individual tickets for Robin Eubanks and The Collective are $15 general; $12 senior; $8 student.

An Evening with Joshua Redman will be held Friday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Lawlor Events Center on campus. Those who know say superlative things about Joshua Redman, the incredibly accomplished young man from Berkeley who graduated summa ***** laude from Harvard, considered medical school, got into Yale Law School and went instead toward his own music: “The crown prince of the tenor saxophone.” (Associated Press); “...one of the biggest names in jazz.” (San Jose Mercury News); “A fully formed master of the tenor sax.” (GQ Magazine); and, simply, “Genius.” (Michael Brecker). Shortly after turning down law school in 1991, he created a sensation by taking first place in the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Saxophone competition, which landed him a record deal with Warner Bros. Touring and recording with his father, the legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman, as well as with Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, Elvin Jones and Paul Motian, Joshua Redman emerged with his own eclectic approach to jazz and a deep commitment to grow and mature as an artist. Along the way Redman has garnered numerous honors, including a variety of firsts and bests (Best New Artist, Jazz Artist of the Year, Jazz Album of the Year, and No. 1 Tenor Saxophonist) in Rolling Stone, Jazziz and Downbeat Critics and Readers polls. The NY Times agrees Joshua Redman is on the path: “There’s only a handful of naturally gifted musicians, and Joshua’s one of them. Every time you hear him, he’s at a higher level.” Redman delivers a balance of eloquence and eclectic exploration — swing, funk, groove-based — some would call “new sound, old spirit,” that veteran Redman listeners have come to expect and revere.

Individual tickets for An Evening with Joshua Redman are $24 general; $18 senior; and $12 student.

Individual tickets for the showcase and awards ceremony are $10 general; $8 senior; and $6 student.
