Mt. Hood Jazz Fest anounces 2004 headliners Posted by: Adminon Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 09:03 AM
The Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, one of the nation's longest running and the Portland area's best known jazz festival, enters its 23rd year and is proud to announce classic jazz legends the Heath Brothers and vocal icon Abbey Lincoln as headliners for its 2004 event, to be held August 7-8, at Main City Park in Gresham, Oregon.
The producer of the festival, the Gresham/Mt. Hood Jazz Association and its president Mary McSwain hailed the announcement as a great day for Northwest jazz lovers. "This year jazz fans will see a number of artists who have not come to the Northwest in quite some time, if ever. It is the most exciting lineup we've had in years. There's something for every generation of jazz fan."
The MT. HOOD JAZZ FESTIVAL is also proud to announce Adventures In Jazz, a concert series featuring premier performers from all corners of the jazz world at venues throughout the Portland area. Adventures In Jazz kicks off April 4th with Hammond B-3 organ legend Jimmy Smith at the Aladdin Theater. The new series at Blue Monk, Portland's new jazz hot spot, includes concerts by John Coltrane drummer dynamo Rashied Ali and his Quintet, featuring Reggie Workman and Ravi Coltrane (April 22-23), saxophonist Dave Liebman (May 8th), and another Hammond B-3 hero, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Crash (June 18-19).
Adventures in Jazz culminates with our flagship event, the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival, the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, August 7-8, held in Gresham's Main City Park. Along with Abbey Lincoln (Aug. 8) and the Heath Brothers featuring Jimmy, Percy, and Albert "Tootie" Heath, (Aug. 7), confirmed acts include neo-guitar star Charlie Hunter (Aug. 8) and saxophone colossus James Carter (Aug. 7)—who, continuing in the "Attack of the Killer B-3's" theme – appears in a special Hammond B-3 organ driven lineup. Look for more exciting acts to be confirmed.
Tickets for the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival go on sale April 16th through Ticketmaster, and at the Aladdin Theater Box Office (with reduced service charge). Jimmy Smith tickets are on sale now. Adventures In Jazz concerts at the Blue Monk are available through the Aladdin Theater Box Office and Blue Monk only.
