Keith Jarrett Trio, Newark 4/11/03

You wouldn't have known from last night's performance that their last 2 albums were standard-free improv. It was all standards last night. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I was a bit disappointed, as I was hoping for something more of a tightrope walk. Last year at Carnegie they did a couple of improv things, but nothing last night, unless the couple of themes I didn't recognize were spontaneous (but I doubt it).

At any rate, it was a thoroughly enjoyable show nonetheless. Peacock was featured prominently, but DeJohnette was more subdued than in the past.

Among the highlights were an abstract solo intro that slowly honed in on "All the Things You Are" changes until the trio picked up the tune. That and an infectious Latin vamp that went on for a while until it formed the underpinning for "Out of Nowhere."

I was also pleased that the last encore was one of my favorite songs, "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry."

This is the third time I've seen the trio since Inside Out came out, and only at one of those shows did they even give a nod to that approach.

There is a CD of this trio coming out on 20. May that sounds pretty much like this (standards-based) approach, I think it's called Up For It. It's a live recording from Antibes from 2002. I haven't decided if I'll pick it up or not yet. Point being, it doesn't sound as if they're continuing in the vein of Inside Out in their live shows.

Hi Pete, from your observation how's the physical condition of Peacock and Jarrett? Coz I heard that Peacock is not in good shape and has to cancel a few gigs on and off in the last year or two. As for Jarrett he's been sick for so long. Really show concern.

I get the feeling the the trio is still mostly playing standards, but may do a freer approach if they feel like it during that performance.

I was under the impression Jarrett had made a pretty full recovery from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome...?

A friend was telling me that their recent concert in Brussels was very poor, and they got booed by the public. I wasn't there (cheapest seat was 40 euros!)

I am wondering the reason behind of the Keith Jarrett Trio playing all those standards is that they are going to have the 20th anniversary of the Standard Trio.

Anyway, I wish all the great musicians good health and keep good music going.

No matter what, I pay my deep respect to the Trio.

I'd probably fork over the cash if I had the chance, just b/c I've never had the chance to hear Jarrett live, and it's so rare I get to be somewhere with good live music. I'm sorry to hear that the Brussels show wasn't too great...

It's all a moot point, though, b/c I get to maybe one or two jazz shows a year. :/

Peacock was on death's doorstep last spring with a stomach hemmorage (I think) and had to cancel gigs then (including one with Crispell I had tickets for), but I think he's OK now. He was in fine form at the show in Newark. Jarrett seems to be fine too.
