The 2004 JVC Jazz Festival New York covers the city with music from June 15-June 26 featuring more than 300 artists in nearly 60 events and 17 venues. In this landmark year for jazz, JVC celebrates its 20th year in New York, and in August FPI marks the 50th anniversary of the world’s first jazz festival: The Newport Jazz Festival, also sponsored by JVC and officially called JVC Jazz Festival – Newport, RI. JVC JAZZ FEST NY AT CARNEGIE HALL: DEBUTS, JAZZ LEGENDS and A TRIBUTE TO NINA SIMONE!
João Gilberto, whose concerts regularly sell out, makes his third JVC appearance on Friday, June 18. In her debut as a headliner at the Hall, k.d. lang sings with The Brooklyn Philharmonic with conductor Charles Floyd on Saturday, June 19. Ornette Coleman, back after his historical concert last year, shares the evening with Abbey Lincoln in her first Carnegie Hall headline performance on Sunday, June 20. On Monday, June 21, don’t miss Sing the Truth … A Tribute to Nina Simone featuring two of her bands led by her long-time musical director Al Schackman with a diverse all-star line-up including Toni Morrison, Oscar Brown, Jr., Tracy Chapman, Floetry, her daughter Simone, James "Blood" Ulmer with Vernon Reid, Lizz Wright, Odetta and others.
The Carnegie Hall concerts continue on Wednesday, June 23 with Lou Reed, also making his debut as a headliner at the Hall; Dianne Reeves & Peter Cincotti on Thursday, June 24; a new quartet featuring Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland & Brian Blade on Friday, June 25 and the annual Salsa Jazz Jam with Oscar D’Leon, Poncho Sanchez & Jimmy Bosch on Saturday, June 26.

KICKIN’ IT AT THE KAYE!
Bill Charlap Trio kicks off the festival on Tuesday, June 15; Maria Schneider and her orchestra perform the last concert of their residency at the Kaye on Thursday, June 17; Phil Woods and his quintet take the stage with a huge celebration including guests Clark Terry, Frank Wess, Antonio Hart and others on Monday, June 21; and finishing at the Kaye on Wednesday, June 23 will be the popular vocalists Steve Tyrell and Stacey Kent.

JVC Jazz Festival NY moves into Merkin Concert Hall at the Kaufman Center with four exciting concerts: A new jazz trio starring Scofield/Swallow/Stewart, Brad Mehldau & Fred Hersch finish the Monday Nights-No Minimum series, Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and his quartet and legendary drummer Roy Haynes and his quartet.
