New York, NY (January 20,2005) Jazz at Lincoln Center is pleased to announce that the Bank of America Jazz Festival will take place from February 15 - 20 at Frederick P. Rose Hall on Broadway at 60th Street. Bank of America is the proud presenting sponsor of Jazz at Lincoln Center's inaugural season in the organization's new home, Frederick P. Rose Hall. The Bank of America Jazz Festival ideology reflects both the company's commitment to the arts and culture and Jazz at Lincoln Center's mission to produce first-class jazz education and performance programming.
The festival's line-up of artists include Jazz at Lincoln Center's resident orchestra, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (LCJO) with special guest artists, the Bill Charlap Trio and Carol Sloane with The Norman Simmons Quintet, featuring Eric Alexander and Paul Bollenback.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 17-19 at 8:00pm in Rose Theater, the LCJO will perform the music of Paul Whiteman – a bandleader who helped usher in the big band style of the Jazz Age - with three very special performances. Special guests Bob Wilber (clarinet/soprano sax), Daryl Sherman (vocals), Vince Giordano (tuba and other instruments), James Chirillo (guitar) will join the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra to perform the groundbreaking works that Mr. Whiteman wrote for large ensemble, breaking the convention of small jazz ensembles and giving rise to "symphonic jazz." On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 17-19 at 7:30pm in The Allen Room, pianist Bill Charlap will lead his longtime rhythm section featuring bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (no relation) to play a set of swingin' evenings in The Allen Room overlooking Central Park, Columbus Circle and the breathtaking Manhattan skyline. Joining the trio will be saxophonist/flutist Frank Wess and guitarist Peter Bernstein as well as vocalists Sandy Stewart (Mr. Charlap's mother) and Ernie Andrews.
Also as part of the Bank of America Jazz Festival, Carol Sloane with the Norman Simmons Quintet will perform on Tuesday through Sunday, February 15-20 at 7:30pm and 9:30pm and during additional 11:30pm sets on Friday and Saturday, at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola. Ms. Sloane will present her sensual and swinging interpretations of the Great American Songbook and Brazilian standards accompanied by her musical partners of several decades, the legendary pianist/arranger Norman Simmons, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Ben Riley. For this special engagement, Ms. Sloane has invited special guest soloists Paul Bollenback on guitar and the fiery young saxophonist Eric Alexander.
