NORTH WOODS JAZZ CAMP/JAZZ PARTY

This is to announce the establishing of a new jazz event that will interest many of you. It is a combination JAZZ CAMP/JAZZ PARTY held for 4 days in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. This will be an event for adults of 21 or older on May 19-22, 2005.

WHERE: Holiday Acres Resort, Rhinelander, Wisconsin, nestled on the wooded shores of Lake Thompson. Rhinelander is 3 hours driving time north of Madison, 60 minutes north of Wausau, 6 hours northwest of Chicago, 5 hours east of Minneapolis. Rhinelander supports an airport with regular airline flights to Minneapolis and Milwaukee.

WHEN: Thursday morning, May 19 through brunch Sunday, May 22, 2005

WHAT: A summer jazz camp/jazz party. A faculty of jazz professionals will teach instrumental master classes, improvisation, jazz listening (how to listen, and who to listen to, old and new), combo playing (and perhaps big band), with concert each night (open to the public) where advanced students sit in with the pros. A major “perk” will be students hanging with the faculty at meals, story sessions (ie. about the big bands), and jam sessions.

WHO: The students can be players or non-players (auditors). No prior expertise is required. A spouse or other family member who is not a student, is welcome to stay free with the student and to take advantage of the special meal package available to the students. The enjoyment of the resort facilities, pool, and surrounding woods and water are an important part of the Holiday Acres experience.. This will be an intimate event with 25-30 students maximum.

FACULTY: The 7 professionals will be on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums, and vocals. Jim Widner, who hosts several summer jazz camps, and was deeply involved with the Stan Kenton summer jazz camps, will be the administrator.

THE SETTING: Holiday Acres is a year-round vacation resort on the beautiful shore of Lake Thompson, 4 miles outside of Rhinelander, WI. Every afternoon will be time for activities such as boating, fishing, indoor pool, sandy swimming beach, water skiing, hiking, cookouts, tennis, volleyball, and shuffleboard, with horseback riding and golf nearby) in a beautiful woodsy setting or just enjoying the sunset (the sandy beach faces west). There is also a campground nearby. I invite you to check out Holiday Acres at
