Alright, who's thinking about going?
I'm planning on at least an overnighter and if I can swing it (no pun intended), two days and two nights.

Victo?
It's the shibboleth for Victoriaville.

Pete -- I might say the same about it. If I lived in New York!
But I don't. And V-ville is only three hours' drive from my door.
Truly, though, perhaps because it's not in New York or some other such major city, there is much more interaction between fans and musicians and artists there than any other festival I've attended. Probably because there's nothing else to do but that's a large part of what makes it a great gathering of musicians and music people. The bar at the hotel's kind of like what they (used to say about the old) Times Square. If you spend enough time there, you'll run into everyone sooner or later.
I'd have driven up last year just for the JC flying squad/Eskelin/Parkins/Black after-hours hang alone, never mind their hugely enjoyable concert beforehand.

I'm considering it. I've only been to a couple of their festivals and particularly enjoyed hanging out at the hotel bar and restaurant. Can't say that I've ever been able to fully enjoy concerts in the hockey arena though. So far I've heard about the Brotzmann Tentet and a possible Little Huey set, probably both in the arena. There's always the fear that William would be put in the penalty box, two minutes for vamping, or Brotzmann two minutes for illegal use of the taragato. I'd need a few more of interest to me to put me over the edge. It's a really long haul from Detroit.

Yeah, that's basically the point for me. There's always stuff I'd be interested in, but it seems like such a schlep, and lots of the artists do get to the Apple. The food reports have not helped either.

I know that this has been discussed before, but what are the options in getting to Victo from Montreal, assuming that one took a train there?

I saved my complaining until I got back to work the next day. Believe it ot not, I think that Detroit to Victoriaville is even farther, or at least as far. Thank God for car CD players and oldies radio stations. Nothing beats singing along to bad old pop songs on a long boring road.

Are they all bad? You need to find a better oldies station.

As Jon said, Michel Levasseur don't give information sevral months before...
I know that Hubbub will play there.

They have recorded on Four4ears and more recently on Matchless (Hoop Whoop and Hoib).

They usually post the timetable around mid-April. That said, the chances of all the most interesting gigs being on one day is pretty slim. (Of course I'm not sure what you consider the most interesting gigs to be...)

I went for the first time 2 years ago after arriving in Montreal by train. The simple answer is bus.
Oh and as for whoever it was who mentioned the food... well imagine what its like for an English vegetarian (yep I stayed in the bars all day ;)
Anyhow I'll be there with my Buddy William posssibly the only person going ape at the Lars Hollmer and Plastic People sets...

since Thurston Moore is supposedly booking a "day" of the festival, and not just shows here and there, the educated guess would be that that would be Monday, and would encompass Wolf Eyes, Hair Police, No Neck, Dead Machines, Double Leopards, and possibly the Dream Aktion Unit (although that looks like a Saturday or Sunday night 8 PM special). that would/will be likely the wildest day of shows in Victo history.
Gary Sisco
February-17th-2005, 10:33 AM
And if a Monday, also my day off, so I wouldn't have to pay someone to do my work for me. Hmmmm..... A Monday in Quebec....

The Boredoms are listed as being officially on the 23rd (Monday) - so this is probably the "noise" day. Anyone else know any confirmed dates for the announced shows?

The website for info on the No-Neck Blues Band has them playing on May 21.

I figured that would probably be part of the day someone said
Thurston Moore is curating, but since the Boredoms is May 23rd, looks
like stuff like the NNBB (May 21), Wolf Eyes, Double Leapords, Boredoms will be spread across different days. Now if someone knew when Anthony Braxton was playing....

Any strange color houses in Tibet?
I'll ask my hubby, who works for the newspaper ( which i don't usually read) if he's seen anything about that festival, and let you know. Strangely, that festival isn't announced very much around.

Canada produces lots of beef and pork meat, potatoes and wheat.
That's what is found on the grocery shelves. Therefore. people can still afford buying meat here. But, this said, there's no meat in a Poutine!

Double Leopards are on the 21st also, it looks like that will be Thurston Moore's day, with Hair Police, Wolf Eyes, NNCK, Dead Machines, and maybe the Dream Aktion Unit (probably the 8 PM show). the No Fun festival invades Quebec, should be interesting...

you might like that stuff, Pat. Dream Aktion specifically is a power combo of Thurston Moore, Jim O'Rourke, Paul Flaherty and Chris Corsano.

Steve -- Me, too, but a whole lot is going to depend on the scheduling of the artists and my own available time to be able to get up there, and for how long. Also, I'm hoping Roots and Mingus can also make it, so there are other schedules as well in there, to work out.
I need a roadtrip though for some music. It must happen. It must happen soon.

Looks like a longshot for my attending. But, could somebody post anything they know about the Bus Line that runs from Montreal to Victo? Slight chance I'd take a train from Windsor to Montreal. Then I'm stranded. Apparently, Greyhound, Canada never heard of Victoriaville. The train could get me as far as Drummondville, QC.

If you guys do a road trip, it would tip me over into going just for Saturday night, home again Sunday morning, esp if there's floorspace in the hotel room. The other days don't interest me that much, considering the expense required when I go away, but I'd like to hear those bands live, and the social life would be excellent.
As it is, I've written off music trips this year to put the bread instead into an upgrade of the stereo system.

Whew, Sunday is incredible. Braxton, Brotzmann, Little Huey. Not to mention Hubub and Xu Fengxia. I really like Frederic Blondy's work with Le Quan Ninh, and that Hubub disc was pretty good too.
And I'd really like to see Stefan Scodanibbio on Saturday. I really just heard of him recently from a great Brian Ferneyhough disc on Naive, a piece for solo double bass. I think that's all I've heard from him, though his name sounded familiar when I picked up the disc. And our old friend John Olson, from Detroit, will be playing. John and I got together on a couple of collaborations here, one crazy one that he played with Blaise Siwula. I'm not sure that even the Victo crowd will be ready for him.

Hello all, this year is going to be my first Victo festival and I had a few questions for any of the veterans of Victo's past.
How is seating arranged, are we assigned seats or is it first come first serve?
About how many people attend this fest?
Any restaurant recommendations? Good eats, places to avoid?
How far apart are the venues?
Thanks-
Michael

How is seating arranged, are we assigned seats or is it first come first serve?
There are three venues. A cinema that seats about 300 or so, a small auditorium at a local community college that seats about 150 or so, sometimes set up with rows of seats and other times with just an open floor are and bleachers in the back. The third is the large venue, which seats about 500-700 people depending upon how it is set up. All seating is first come first serve.
About how many people attend this fest?
Over the course of the five days, total seats sold is about 5000 or so. But I think the largest audience they have had so far for one show is about 700.
Any restaurant recommendations? Good eats, places to avoid?
There is a passible Greek restaurant, but don't go to Victo expecting great food!
How far apart are the venues?
All are within an easy walk of each other and shows are timed so that there is time to get from one venue to another.

I'm really hoping to come down, but it depends upon how things pan out at work. Funny to think that, these days, I have to go down to NY to hear Jason Lescalleet and Nmperign. And getting to hear Mark Wastell live would be hard to pass up.
