George Wein, founder of the Newport, JVC, New Orleans jazz festivals, not to mention Storyville in Boston has just published his biography, "Myself Among Others". It's over 500 pages and, from the index, looks like a pretty complete look at his long career. There are "interlude" sections on Miles, Monk, Ellington, etc. At first glance it looks to be an interesting read. Film at 11!

Steve, I'm currently on page 96 of this most enjoyable book and my immediate reactions are:
1) I wish the book would never end and
2) I wish I had the time to read it non-stop, in one gulp and
3) I'm wanting to savor it slowly!!
Even if I didn't "know" George, his family, some of his staff/friends and many of the musicians he talks about, I'm sure I would only be slightly less enthralled!! I'm learning so much that I never knew and even remembering things I had forgotten like the year I last saw Dinah Washington perform which turns out was 1959 (at Fenway Park)!!
George has led an incredibly fascinating life and has dealt with and known just about every legendary jazz musician for the past 50+ years. His stories are priceless.
Even my father gets a paragraph or two in the Storyville discussions, although I don't think it's mentioned that he also did the advertising and publicity for the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals from the '50s through the '80s!!
Last but not least, IMHO, I think the book is very well written. Thanks for starting this thread, Steve. I had mentioned it in the What Are You Reading section but never saw any response/reaction to it.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I am!!
