Exploding Customer - Live at Glenn Miller Cafe

This might be old news to a lot of posters (I've received recs from Al & Michael) but I couldn't find this in the archives for Best of 2002; so maybe I'm not as far behind as I always think I am. This is incredibly hot; I don't really know what to compare it to but it sounds as fresh as the first time I heard Ornette. All compositions are by saxophonist Martin Kuchen, who plays tenor, alto & soprano, all extremely well. The songs all have a propulsive groove to them, maintained by bassist Benjamin Quigley and drummer Kjell Nordeson, who has played drums with the AALY Trio & vibes with School Days. The major surprise for me was how much I enjoyed the playing of trumpeter Tomas Hallonsten; this guy's solos are to be savored as he spits out rapid fire lines and then turns on a dime to explore a new, but logical, avenue. Top 10 of 2003 for me, for sure. OK shrugs?

I've been looking around for that Unsolicited Ensemble disc "Bulbs" and thus far only Verge lists it for $24.00. Anyone else know where this can be obtained for a more reasonable price? Thanks

Though I don't see Bulbs listed in the Cadence catalogue for some reason, they do stock Slam discs, at $16 US apiece, & I'm sure could get it for you.

That's cool - Jazz Loft is one of the sites I'm referring to in my post on the Jimmy Cliff thread. A lot of people may be already aware of these sites but at the same time I'm sure a lot of people are not. The French one has only recently started up. Do you think it it would be worth posting their site addresses and a bit if info about them? By the way, the Jazzhearts CD got a bit of air play in St Louis during August on Dennis Owsley's "Jazz Unlimited" programme on Sunday nights on KMWU. Do you know the programme?

Yeah that's our NPR affiliate. The show is in the modern straight-ahead vein so I believe you ought to do well there. You should also try to get in touch w/KCUR in Kansas City, MO. They emphasize jazz much, much more and have several great shows.

Whee, baby, this is one of the best CDs I've heard in a while.... I can't stop listening to it. Great tunes, great playing (I've heard Kjell Nordeson before in AALY, but somehow I didn't realize what a badass he really is). One of the very best "post-Ornette" (for lack of a better term--by which I essentially mean a pianoless quartet playing tunes and soloing pretty freely) discs I've ever heard.

Some serendipity may be at work here. For no particular reason I pulled Exploding Customer from the pile of unlistened-to discs this weekend and gave it a long listen. Just wonderful stuff; Ornette's classic group updated for the naughts. Then this morning, a friend reminded me that I rarely visited JC anymore, so here I am, and here is a new thread all about the band I was grooving to all weekend.

Glad to see the sharp ears are still hanging out in these parts; thanks for the takes on this great disc. The whole Ayler catalogue, BTW, is outstanding; check out their two Anders Gahnold discs, including the recent double with Johnny Dyani.
