Bela Fleck is listing a date with Jean Luc Ponty and STanley Clarke. As you mentioned, it'll probably be a while before the lineup is out.
Although this indicates things won't be as solid as last year's no-fusion 50th anniversary bash, the second stage has allowed for some pretty good non-sugarcoated programming over the past few years.

Newport folk, jazz fests announce headliners
NEWPORT -- Folk singer Arlo Guthrie will headline the Dunkin' Donuts Newport Folk Festival on Aug. 5, and performer Ertha Kitt will kick off the JVC Newport Jazz Festival a week later.
Festival organizers this morning announced dates for the festivals and named many of the featured acts. Tickets go on sale Saturday.
Dunkin' Donuts Newport Folk Festival
The folk fest, which runs Aug. 5-7, is a new gig for Dunkin' Donuts. Jon Luther, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands, Inc., and George Wein, CEO of Festival Productions, Inc., announced that Dunkin’ Donuts will be title sponsor of the festival through 2007.
On Friday, Aug. 5, Guthrie will perform his “Alice’s Restaurant 40th Anniversary Massacree Tour” at the Newport Casino at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, 194 Bellevue Ave. The event will also feature special guest Grammy-winning artist Nanci Griffith, in her own set, and The Mammals, who will appear with Guthrie.
Guthrie's career took off in 1967 with the release of the album "Alice's Restaurant," whose title song premiered at the 1967 Newport folk festival.
Tickets for the event will range from $30 to $75 and will go on sale at noon Saturday at the Newport Festival office at 770 Aquidneck Ave. in Middletown, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets will also be available through Ticketweb, by calling 1 (866) 468-7619, or by mail order. Call 1 (401) 847-3700 for more information and office hours.
The festival will continue on Saturday and Sunday, with live music each day on three stages from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Fort Adams State Park. The full line-up will be announced in mid-May; the tickets for those dates will go on sale after that announcement.
The jazz festival will run from Aug. 11-14, starting with a screening of the documentary film “Miles Electric: A Different Kind of Blue” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at the Jane Pickens Theatre, 49 Touro St.
The film features the late jazz icon Miles Davis in concert at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival at the beginning of his “electric” period.
The jazz fest continues with the annual Friday night celebration at 8 p.m. at the Newport Casino at the tennis hall of fame. The program will feature a performance by film, theater, cabaret and television star Eartha Kitt. The Artie Shaw Orchestra will also appear.
The festival will continue from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, on three stages at Fort Adams State Park, with the Pulitzer Prize-winning Wynton Marsalis appearing both days.
The Saturday program includes: Howard Alden, Geri Allen, Patricia Barber, Carla Bley, Richard Bona, Stanley Clarke, Ravi Coltrane, Jon Faddis, Bela Fleck, Slide Hampton, Dave Liebman, Charles Lloyd, Joe Lovano, Marsalis, Medeski Martin & Wood, T.S. Monk, Jean-Luc Ponty, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Steve Smith, Terrel Stafford, Mike Stern, McCoy Tyner, Mark Whitfield and others.
The Sunday program will include: Michael Brecker, Dave Brubeck, Gary Burton, Don Byron, Chick Corea, Larry Coryell, Taylor Eigsti, Bill Frisell, Benny Green, Louis Hayes, Roy Haynes, Vincent Herring, Dave Holland, Hank Jones, Julian Lage, Joe Lovano, Mike Mainieri, Russell Malone, Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jason Moran, Joshua Redman, Matt Wilson and others.
Tickets will go on at 10 a.m. Saturday via Ticketweb, by phone at 1 (866) 468-7619 and at the Newport Festival office.
Call 1 (401) 847-3700 for more information and future office hours. Tickets will also be available by mail order.
