Albums You Want To See Reissued
Song of Singing on bluenote
Chick Corea/Dave Holland/Barry Altschul
I think a lot of jazz fans would like this. This one may be better than *Now He Sings, Now He Sobs*, albeit it's in a more free-ish vein. It's free, but I think Corea brings a kind of lyrical quality. The interplay is pretty great too.
What albums would you like to see re-issued? Are there any albums that you can't understand why they're not re-issued?

How bout "Echoes of An Era" with Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Freddie Hubbard, Lenny White and Chaka Khan? Never seen it re-issued. Nice straight-ahead jazz.

I already have them all on the Mosaic box, but I think it's a crime against humanity that the vast majority of Andrew Hill's Blue Note discs are out of print.
Time for the RVG treatment that Cecil is getting...

Two ECM-albums!
"The Jewel Of The Lotus" by Bennie Maupin and "Love Love" by Julian Priester.
Both have been members in Herbie Hancock´s Mwandishi group and the music on these albums sounds very close to that group. Herbie plays electric piano on "Jewel Of The Lotus".
Both albums was recorded in 1974.

Don't hold your breath. Blue Note has already said that Hill doesn't sell well.

with a twist
Anthony Braxton - WILLISAU (QUARTET) 1991 - (hatART)
Anthony Braxton - QUARTET (SANTA CRUZ) 1993 - (hatART)
Abdullah Ibrahim - YARONA - (Tiptoe)
Ellery Eskelin - ONE GREAT DAY (hatOLOGY) - I've recently obtained this through amazon.com, but I waited 8 weeks. It is officially out of print, but should be made available for others to enjoy.
There are countless others but these are the ones I've been wanting to get my hands on for quite a while.

Arbiter of Good Taste
I used to have an album on vinyl by Jan Hammer and Jerry Goodman - just after Mahavishnu - called "Like Children" - I really like it and would love to get a copy, but it seems it was never released on CD!!

Stoney - I think Willisau is being reissued later this year: check Jazzmatazz for a list of upcoming releases.

That's very good news, Bostontricky. Thanks for the heads up.
Odd that Jazzmataz has it tagged "1979".
What is even more confusing is if you ever try and obtain "London" or "Coventry" sets from 1985 from any source other than Leo. You click on a link for Coventry, and they show you London. I want Coventry but am afraid if I try and order it from a local source I'll end up with a second copy of London. What a drag.

I know. . .just don't have the grip for the full Parlan box. Plus, this particular date's been on my wish list for the past few years. What's the best way aside from ebay to look for Japanese reissues? Of the few that I have, I find the sound exceptional. Hank Mobley's "Poppin'" is a prime example. . .a beautiful date with wonderful sound.

I think the TOCJ not the JRVG would be the best bet. TOCJ's are consistently excellent. They are the ones in the jewel case and not the mini-lp case.

DMG does indeed have all available Braxton Leos....an oversight on my part. More money out the door.
Been eyeing that Mosaic Parlan box myself. One good thing about Mosaics, if you're the least bit disappointed, just wait a while, and sell it on Ebay for 1.5-2X what you paid. Still kicking myself for not pouncing on the Sam Rivers when it was in print.
The Moncur III set was definitely worth it for me; a real keeper.

the cantilena of speech
Mal Waldron's 1970s output for Enja should be comprehensively available. They did reissue Hard Talk some years back (not sure if it's still in print) but most of his 1970s output for the label didn't make it to CD.
A lot of Verve/Gitanes discs from the 1990s, which disappeared in an eyeblink: e.g. Rodney Kendrick & Helen Merrill.
Jimmy Woods' Awakening & especially Conflict.
The Sound Aspects catalogue.
Paul Smoker's back catalogue.
The Vanguard session Free Wheelin': Ted Brown, Warne Marsh, Art Pepper.
Large swathes of the JMT back catalogue, especially Motian's Bill Evans.
Large swathes of Hat Art--e.g. the Hemingway sessions & the Plimley/Ellis Kaleidoscopes.
A lot of Blue Note's dead platters--e.g. discs by Jack Walrath, Bennie Wallace & Don Pullen.
Some of the better Gramavision things--e.g. Clusone 3, Previte.

The best way to get a cheap "Japanese version" of Parlan's "Up & Down" is to pick it up from Spain. They have this weird reissue series (that appears to be "legit") where they re-package Japanese remasters in funky tinted packages under the label "The Blue Note Collection". Fresh Sounds has them all available on their web site... cheap but the shipping is high. The website is: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/newreleases.php . BTW, if you're thinking about making an order and need recs for additional titles (4 seems to be the best number to get a "break" on shipping), try one of these:
CD 075
Cliff Jordan
Clifford Jordan
Featuring: Cliff Jordan ts), Lee Morgan (tp), Curtis Fuller (tb), John Jenkins (as), Ray Bryant (p), Paul Chambers (b), Art Taylor (d)
CD 068
Poppin'
Hank Mobley
Featuring: Art Farmer (tp), Hank Mobley (ts), Pepper Addams (bs), Sonny Clark (p), Paul Chambers (b), Philly Joe Jones (d)
CD 054
Basra
Pete La Roca
Featuring: Joe Henderson (ts), Steve Kuhn (p), Steve Swallow (b), Pete La Roca (d)
CD 047
Let Me Tell You 'bout It
Leo Parker
Featuring: John Burks (tp), Bill Swindell (ts), Leo Parker (bs), Yusef Salim (p), Stan Conover (b), Purnell Rice (d)
CD 018
Like Someone In Love
Art Blakey
Featuring: Art Blakey (d), Lee Morgan (tp), Wayne Shorter (ts), Bobby Timmons (p), Jymie Merritt (b)
CD 013
True Blue
Tina Brooks
Featuring: Tina Brooks (ts), Freddie Hubbard (tp), Duke Jordan (p), Sam Jones (b), Art Taylor (d)
Truth be told, "Basra" is worth paying the mega-bucks for the Japanese Rudy Van Gelder Edition... it's that good.
Also, they have Lee Morgan's "The Cooker" which is some fantastic Pepper Adams, a must for bari sax fans like me (which is also why I included that Leo Parker title well worth picking up).
Later,
Kevin

My local has a bunch of these Spain reissues for around $10. I'll look and see if he has Up and Down or if he can get it. He has a ton of them. He put them up on the counter in the used/cutouts/trade ins section and the bins are now blue all over.
And the JRVG of Basra will give you a semi.

Shrugs, you talkin' about Integrity & Music?? If they have these, I may have to check down there myself. I am thinking about picking up some of these but the shipping from Fresh Sounds is pretty high. My buddy Rob is also very much "in the hunt" for Blakey's "Like Someone In Love", which, as you know, commands pretty good money on ebay. I'd love to be able to cop one of these for him.
Later,
Kevin

Integrity it is. I can pick some up if you want. I am sure media mail shipping would be cheaper than the gas you would spend to get down here.
I am going there today anyway.

Wow thanks guys. . .maybe I'm asking too much, but could I toss these in w/"Up & Down"?
"Basra" (never heard it)
"Elder Don" (peripheral of that recent two-fer)
Grif's "The Congregation"
Hank's "Curtain Call"
So is the cover art the same? Just a blue jewel box? Sounds okay? Thanks again.

Stonemonk - sorry for the confusion about the pending Braxton reissues.
I will strive in the future to avoid posting on vital threads until the first jolt of caffeine hits the bloodstream.
- - - - -
Jimmy Giuffre's later work on Verve - Ad Lib, Seven Pieces, and In Person. (The Easy Way is due out next month!)
Baikida Carroll - The Spoken Word
Joe McPhee - Graphics
Joe McPhee - Impressions of Jimmy Giuffre
George Russell - Sextet in K.C. (falls between "Stratusphunk" and "Ezz-Thetics")
- - - - -
Guilty Pleasure Division: Maynard Ferguson's early-70s "M.F. Horn" albums, Herb Alpert & Hugh Masekela's live album...

Shrugs, thank you for the offer. I actually visit my parents in Holyoke often during the summer... I was thinking about going out there this holiday weekend.
While you're there today, could you check to see if they have Blakey's "Like Someone In Love", Freddie Roach's "Down To Earth" or Corea's "Early Circle"? Those are the three titles I was interested in... well, Jimmy Smith's "Softly As A Summer Breeze" could be OK too... hmmm.

Michael, in looking at Fresh Sounds' website, I don't see either "Curtain Call" or "Elder Don" listed. Maybe in the future? As for the cover art, the website shows it if you click on the title. They are all tinted blue. I thought I read that they are digipaks, but shrugs could tell us since he's seen them at Integrity. The sound is supposed to be the same as the TOCJ CDs from Japan. Some people, myself included, think these sound better than any of the US editions.

Kevin, he had multiple copies of the Blakey. But I am hearing that Cuscuna is pissed these ever even made it to the US. Seems like no more will be brought in. Grab these while they're around!!
