The Horo catalog. Why is Sinesio hoarding that stuff? Surely somebody would license it if he doesn't want to release them himself.

I'd like to see the first Sphere (Charlie Rouse, Kenny Barron, Buster Williiams, Ben Riley) album back in print. I believe it was (unknowingly) recorded on the day that Monk died.

the cult of "Basra" has always mystified me. It is a perfectly good album of its kind (free-leaning 60's BN), and I'm a huge Joe Henderson fan, but its no masterpiece. Of course, with Basra the city in the news lately...

Another vote for the OOP Mal Waldron issues. Speaking of Mal, does anyone have an opinion of the recent Waldron/Lacy Hatology 4 CD live release from 1981? (Live At Dreher Paris) Jurek over at AMG rates it 4 1/2 stars (vol. 2). I have Communique, Hot House, and the beautiful Sempre Amore. If the 4 CD set is similar in quality, then I think it's well worth the $.

I have this on CD. It is called "Four In One". It's been reissued in Europe. I bought it in Germany last summer. I haven't been able to find the second title yet ("Flight Path") but I know it was reissued in the same series so it's just a matter of time before I find it.

BTW, these things aren't too expensive when you do find them. They're in some mid-price series from Warner/Electra in France. Tower lists "Four In One" as a special order but they dropped their listing for "Flight Path".

    Later,

    Re: Waldron/Lacy 4 cd set
There are some absolute moments of brilliance. Possibly my favorite cut of Let's Call This. Too bad they left off the cut of Epistrophy with guest Enrico Rava on trumpet. It's on one of the Hat Art 2 lp sets.
The back cover of Flight Path shows the band in front of the Twin Towers. Strange coincidence.

definitely worth the $30 or so they are charging. Anybody see the guy in Japan bid it up to $87? I have sold to the guy too and offered to help him get anything he needed after he bid up some of my cd's. He politely declined. $$ must grow on banzai's for him.

I ragged about this on the old JCS and got lots of agreement: Kings of Mali by Chico Freeman. Chico has been in a very deep valley compared to the heights that he hit on that India Navigation masterpiece.

Well, at least for this one, you know that all you have to do is be patient. They're all coming out on Winter and Winter, slowly and chronologically.

As for the wish list, I'd like Steve Kuhn and Sheila Jordan's Playground for me, since that's where I first fell in love with both of them. And I'd like Shirley Horn's Embers and Ashes for my girlfriend, who's got great taste. Just out of curiosity, I'd love to hear Bill Dixon's Intents and Purposes, though the chances that RCA would revive it are slim to nil. Louis Bellson's Thunderbird is a sentimental favorite of mine, though not so much that I wanted to pay through the nose for the Japanese Impulse edition. And I'll second anyone who's voted for Julius Hemphill's Dogon A.D..

Even though I've got the entire set, I'd love to see John Carter's entire "Roots and Folklore" cycle united and issued en masse, for all the folks who've heard about it without being able to hear it. (For that matter, let's have the John Carter/Bobby Bradford releases from Flying Dutchman as well... oh, wait, that's RCA again.) And it goes without saying that I would be one of the first to snag that mythical Mosaic box of Braxton's Aristas, but as shrugs has pointed out, it's reasonably cheap and easy to get pretty much all of it on vinyl.

I'm sure I'll think of more, but those would be a really good start.

Well I don't have the entire set. . .and to your suggestion I say: "Fuckin' right."

I have both the Flying Dutchman lp's and can record them. Both are pretty darn good.
I also have an extra Castles of Ghana on lp if anyone is looking to buy one.

I didn't notice him, but I did see how much the aforementioned Willisau set fetched a few weeks ago (around $110 if memory serves).

I just bid on the Lacy/Waldron 4CD box. If I get outbid I'm ready to send Cadence ANOTHER non-subscriber charge and order the blasted thing. I can also get it from either DMG or Jazz Loft for a few extra bucks. I suppose the only question for me is which of the 3 venues should get the $. Might seem like nitpicking but I'd rather pay a little extra if it means supporting a worthy venue (kind of a no brainer).

Were there really only two of them? I've got Self-Determination Music on LP, but not Flight for Four. But I've also got the West Coast Hot split CD with Horace Tapscott, which I'd always assumed must be Flight for Four. Yes? No? These are the four tunes on the CD:

    1. Call to the Festival - 9:30
    2. The Second Set - 8:42
    3. Woman - 7:10
    4. Abstractions for Three Lovers - 6:39

. . .just to clarify and come off even more pedantic. I already have and cherish 'Elder Don.' Every dinner party I host, this kicks it off (then Budd Johnson for the rest of the night). I meant to say I wanted to find 'Preach Brother!' Is this available outside of the two-fer?

Again thanks Dave and Kevin, et. al. for your kind help. I'm not shitting you in that some of these dates have been on 'the list' in my billfold for at least four years. Even Lon couldn't find these for me back in the days when people talked about music on bulletin boards.

Okay. . .'Preach Brother!' then someone find an 'Update' for me.

Tops on my list is The College Concert of Pee Wee Russell and Henry "Red" Allen.

I see that Verve has recently reissued Ask Me Now!, so maybe there's hope...

While you're there today, could you check to see if they have Blakey's "Like Someone In Love", Freddie Roach's "Down To Earth" or Corea's "Early Circle"? Those are the three titles I was interested in... well, Jimmy Smith's "Softly As A Summer Breeze" could be OK too... hmmm.

These are going fast, especially the Blakey. Good luck.

Some personal favorites that I think are out of print:

Art Blakey - Golden Boy (Colpix)
Wayne Shorter - Phantom Navigator (Columbia)
Buddy Montgomery - The Two-Sided Album (Milestone)
    Sonny Red - Breezing (Jazzland)
    Joe Farrell - Moongerms (CTI)
Elvin Jones - Genesis (Blue Note)
Freddie Hubbard - High Blues Pressure (Atlantic)

    Brooklyn-

I just can't get over the fact that in many years of participating in jazz bbs discussions, I've never seen someone use that name as a Screen Name. It's a natural!

I'd also hazard a guess that your list is intact as OOP recordings. :-)

A few FMPs I'd like to see are:

Zwei Quintette, FMP 1210/20 (an early version of the COWWS Quintet with Rudiger Carl, Irene Schweizer, Phil Wachsmann, Stephen Wittwer, and Jay Oliver)

Goose pannée, FMP 0190 (Irène Schweizer, Rüdiger Carl, Arjen Gorter, Heinrich Hock

    Also:

Chamberpot, Bead 02 (Richard Beswick, Simon Mayo, Phil Wachsmann, Tony Wren)

Planet Oeuf, XOPF 01 (Hans Anliker, Phil Wachsmann, Alfred Zimmerlin, Felix Bopp, Mani Bielser, Günter Müller, Andi Rathgeb, Phil Durrant, Jacques Widmer, Sami Eugster, Andres Bosshard)

that Planet Oeuf was scheduled in the Unheard Music Series at one point, not sure of its current status as such.

Barefoot Sunday Blues - Ramsey Lewis (Argo 723). This is such a great album from 1963. I'm get mad ever few years when I see that MCA reissues the same old "In Crowd" over and over again.

Early In The Morning - Lorez Alexandria (Argo 663). Lorez at her best.

Don't Look Back - Harold Vick with Shirley Scott. (Strata East 7431)
from 1974. I wonder if Charles Tolliver knows that there are other great recording on his label besides the ones by himself?

Does anyone know who owns Discovery these days? A very good catalog.

It's possible that, Strata East having been an artists' cooperative label, the masters and rights may have reverted to the original artists.

If anyone has been waiting for Leo Smith's Rastafari or Joe McPhee's Visitation, Boxholder has reissued both.
Great sessions that were scarce until now.

I see Cadence has them and I heard about it from the recent DMG transmission.

    Fred K,

Yes, yes, and yes to Bobby Watson and Horizon on bluenote. More people should be able to get these albums. I'm afraid they're waiting to Bobby leaves us, and them re-issue them.

    Brooklyn,

I like Phantom Navigator, too. But I think we're the only two people on the planet that do, and we both have the album, so... Btw, someone I knew mentioned that the group on this album performed live, and those performances were really great. Have you ever heard this group live or via "boots?"
