"I have wanted to play a concert in this format for 25 years: no applause, no words, anonymity between performer and audience member."
- Bobby Previte
Lower Manhattan Cultural Council is pleased to present Swing Space artist Bobby Previte's Diorama, a solo drum concert performed for one listener at a time in our newest Swing Space location on the 31st floor of 14 Wall Street. This landmark site was formerly the private residence of legendary financier J.P. Morgan, and most recently existed as a French bar and restaurant.
In Previte'’s Diorama, each listener enters a small room and sits directly behind the drum set. Unaware of their identity, Previte plays an improvised piece for his solo audience member. The strange, heightened intimacy of the interaction and the expansive, panoramic view of Lower Manhattan from the space create a concert of extremes and oppositions.
Dates & Times
Friday, March 12, 6-10PM
Saturday, March 13, 1-5PM
Friday, March 19, 6-10PM
RSVP required. Please email diorama@bobbyprevite.com to reserve a 15-minute appointment. Admission is free.

In NYC this coming weekend +.
Planning to see Billy Hart @ Iridium and Tom Harrell @ VV.
Any alternate must-sees?
There seems to be a fair amount of interesting shows around town.
Maria Schneider is at the Jazz Standard.
Kenny Werner is at the Kitano.
Houston Person is at the Lennox Lounge.
One For All is at Smoke.
TOM HARRELL is at the Vanguard.
Thanks, Tom.
Got plans for Harrell already. Was thinking of Maria, but probably won't be able to fit her in. Kenny Werner conflicts with our Billy Hart plans.
I'm coming to the City in about 10 days, and I'm thinking about Kurt Rosenwinkel at Birdland. Mostly, I'm thinking about Birdland. Tickets are for an 8:30 show, with dinner served. I really don't want to eat while I'm listening, and I really, really don't want to be part of an audience that is chowing down while the music is playing, if for no other reason than it's always noisy, and no matter what the house says, they always end up serving while the music is playing. The website offers an 11 pm show, but only as part of a post-theater package. I'm guessing that in mid-August we'll be able to just stroll in, but it's just a guess.
Does anybody know what the deal is? And are they kidding about the "dressy business casual" dress code?
Ah, me. Once an East Village hipster, now just another fucking tourist.

I've been to this incarnation of Birdland several times, but I can only guess about whether the 11:00 will sell out in advance for Kurt in August. I'd guess that on a weekend it is fairly likely and on a week night fairly unlikely. But since it's right near Times Square, it's possible that some concierge will steer dozens there.
As far as dress code, I can't imagine anybody saying anything unless you're wearing a sleeveless shirt and/or shorts. The "code" is more a guide for people who have no idea what to wear.
And I bet that if you call them and ask, you can get a reservation without it being part of a post-theater-package.
If you'd like some company, I would be psyched. (And I own this town.)
3/14 Wednesday (DDT)
8 pm
Michael Jaeger, Philipp Schaufelberger, Tom Rainey
Michael Jaeger (tenor sax) Philipp Schaufelberger (guitar) Tom Rainey (drums)
10 pm
Sylvie Courvoisier Trio
Sylvie Courvoisier (piano) Tom Rainey (drums) Mark Helias (bass)
one must imagine that as great as the weekend shows look, the ones ~ 10 days from now look exciting - should be a mix of free, post bop and whatever
any night with 2 sets with the *great* Tom Rainey @ the kit is a no-brainer
and Dr. Dave - no food, no water, no sound at all except the music.
cheap - plus I think Thelil would like the name of the guitarist - never heard of him but I am trying to get to one of the nights besides the 10th.
I'm going to be in Manhattan on the nights of Friday and Saturday, March 16-17. Anybody able to recommend a good show on either of those nights?
I'm aware of Kris Davis playing at Cornelia Street Cafe on the 17th, which sounds interesting to me, but I'm not sure my companions will go for it. They might want something a bit more mainstream.
Nevertheless, I'm looking to consider all options and would love to hear something interesting and challenging -- and will consider ditching my friends if they won't be sufficiently open-minded.
I'm doing a New York City Jazz Scene Thread ressurection. Jazz is alive and well in NYC for those who care to venture out. Caught the first set at Jazz Standard last night. Drummer Antonio Sanchez was in the house with his working band, Antonio Sanchez Migration. It was a breath of fresh air.
Personnel:
Antonio Sanchez - Drums (Ron Thorne, take note. Antonio is both lyrical and bombastic, as the mood suits. Versatile, to say the least.)
David Binney - Alto Sax
Thana Alex - Vocals
Donny McCaslin - Tenor Sax
John Escreet - Piano
Orlando Le Fleming - Bass
Mostly up and coming players except for Donny McCaslin who has been around for a few years. They played well together. All original compositions by the leader. The music was a nice mix of straight ahead stuff with a very healthy dose of free playing. On this outing, I'd venture to say that good music is still to be had. In this particular case I found it in NYC. Who would've thought?

That sounds like a fun band, Jimmy. I'm definitely a fan of Antonio Sanchez, and always happy when a drummer leads and writes for his group. Glad that you and Tommy were able to catch this group in a good setting.
Here's an interesting clip from Kiev in 2011, featuring many of those same musicians:

Binney is hardly a newcomer; about the same age as McCaslin....has produced several of McCaslin's recordings.
I've seen Binney live and he kills. I know Jimmy was joking about "Who knew?" there was good jazz to be had in NYC.
My experience the previous week seeing Billy Harper's quintet with Freddie Hendrix and Francesca Tanksley bore this out for me. In fact I would suggest that if you listed the top 10 shows listed for a good single week NYC it would be more impressive than the top 10 shows of the YEAR for all but a handful of other cities, and I might be being generous.
"If we want a better world we will have to be better people"
Oh and the "vocals" by Thana Alex was basically scatting in, what sounded to me like, Portuguese. I believe her actual name is Thana Alexa. There must be a typo in the program notes. She was quite good, though. Antonio Sanchez introduced her by saying she was his fiance but that had nothing to do with her being up on stage...snicker,snicker. And she's drop dead beautiful.Got my money's worth just looking at her.

btw - Thanks Jimmy - good to hear you and Thelil are still kicking...
also coming up at my favorite spot:
Saturday, Mar 30 - 9:00PM & 10:30PM
KRIS DAVIS
Kris Davis, piano; Mat Maneri, viola; Drew Gress, bass; Nasheet Waits, drums
and then on my birthday:
Thursday, Apr 25 - 8:30PM
MAT MANERI TRIO
Mat Maneri, viola; Ed Schuller, bass; Randy Peterson, drums
This concert will be the 20 year anniversary of this contrapuntal trio who will be playing a collection of music from their past 3 recordings as well as new material. The trio have worked together over the years to try and push the boundaries of what a jazz trio can be, incorporating fresh ways of interpreting modern classical, swing and other forms of music.
