Hey, we just upgraded to a dsl so I'm out of dial up world, finally. Maybe someone here can walk a computer idiot of a geezer through this podcasting business? I know I've been missing stuff I'd rather not. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Probably not of interest to y'all, but the only podcast I've ever seen is a 19-minute making-of-Brian-Wilson's-recent-Christmas-album one. If you're a fan it's wonderful. You can get it on his website.

The application iTunes provides an easy way to subscribe and listen to podcasts. ODEO is a very slick, web-based podcasting tool for listeners and creators.

A podcast is really no more than an audio or video file deliviered via subscription. However, the "magic" is how the files are distributed. When you subscribe to a podcast channel, every time there is a new show, or new content, the audio or video is automatically downloaded to your computer and even your portable music device if you like. It's kind of like Tivo for your mp3 player.

It was too expensive to hook up here until recently. Our new rider/stablehand being only 22 (yikes, I'm 30 years older....) is needless to say plugged in all the time, so it became worth it financially through splitting the cost with her. Makes it more or less the same money we were paying for the dial up. Emusic's amazingly faster! I'd given up on downloading because it would take most a day to download a record and sometimes it would stop along the way and just sit there doing nothing if you weren't there to watch. Takes only seconds, now. Minutes at worst.

Gary, don't know if you have iTunes installed on your computer (just to clarify, that's for Macs and PCs, and is completely free) - but for some time now, all copies of iTunes have come with an entire library of Podcasts that you can subscribe to. Could be worth downloading just for that. They're sorted into category for easy searching, and there's bound to be some stuff that interests you. For instance, I've subscribed to "Democracy Now" (the WBAI show) - hadn't heard it since I lived in NYC, but now it comes automatically to my hard drive every day without me even thinking about it, and then I can listen whenever it's convenient. Of course you don't need iTunes to check out Podcasts, I just find it a great tool for locating interesting ones.

Haven't really got into any music ones yet - if anybody has any suggestions for great ones, I'd be interested to.


If we're talking download sites/programs (like a couple people mentioned slsk), I'd be happy to contribute, but have always had the impression that was a no-no on this site.

Well, primarily because they are technically illegal, and other than veiled references to a couple of the biggies, I've never seen open discussion of best places to go/programs to use on this site.

Gary: My understanding of the term "podcast" is that it is any kind of "program" available on the net in the form of an MP3, so as to make it downloadable into an MP3 player. (I use the term "program" as meaning "show" or "episode" as opposed to the word's use in the phrase "computer program") . Although the most common MP3 players are iPods. playing an MP3 downloaded from a source other than iTunes require a further conversion to Apple's proprietary iTunes format (very easy to do with iTunes software)

If you are looking for broadcasts to play over the PC itself, you don't need (or necessarily want) "podcasts". There are countless archived broadcasts of programs from radio stations, internet radio stations etc. which you can play for free on demand using RealPlayer or MediaPlayer software (or similar)

If you want podcasts, you can find a ton of them by doing a Google advanced search for "podcast links"

If you want streaming audio (rather than podcasts), it can be found in many places. Many NPR programs for instance (such as Fresh Air) have their programs archived and catalogued at their web sites.

A great way to find archived concerts and music is http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.php

A great place to find internet radio stations (including those with archives) is http://www.radio-locator.com/?xyz=2 It has a great advanced search feature, which lets you find radio stations from all over the US and Canada by format, location, or whatever, and provides links to the stations' web pages (where you're likely to find archived broadcasts) OR directly to the station's live streaming feed.

If anybody has need to record streaming audio, I highly recommend Total Recorder, from High Criteria. It's cheap ($11.95), you can save in multiple formats (wav, or various compression types, including mp3, of course), and they constantly send links for free upgrades when new releases come out.

I'm looking forward to checking out the R&B program you provided a link for. It's funny, with all of the artists names mentioned on the link, the first one that caught my eye was Nipsey Russell. Ben Stiller tells a funny story about how Nipsey was obsessed with Anne Meara (Ben's ma and Ben's dad's comedy partner AND wife), and how Nipsey frequently sent her sexual notes and/or phone messages (I forget which).

Agreed, Pete. That's why I retired during my youth while I could enjoy it. Now I have to work in my dotage, but better to work in it than not be able to enjoy "retiring" in it!

Jimmy -- You gave away my secret, lad. But it matters not because I'll fight to avoid using a telephone. By the way, I did have a girlfriend long ago whose family phone in northern Vt, circa '72, was still a handcranked, and the phone company there, a small private company that served the town. Strange but true. I thought it was an antique when I first saw it. Not. But I also had friends in those days who were off the grid, not by choice but because the grid didn't reach out far enough to hook up to it. Still do know a couple, actually, who live far enough out that only Bill Gates could afford to pay the 'lectric company to run lines that far (they charge by the foot, and charge a lot).

DSL has been available here through Verizon for quite awhile but it was twice as much and then some per month as our old dial up. Still is, but our new rider/stablehand's only 22 and that generation has to be wired, man, all of the time. So, we're splitting the cost and have set up a wireless network for the house so we can all use it whereever we are.

Just what I need is to be swamped with new material. I'm swamped with old material, still.....

Umm... okay, well not nearly as exciting as it sounded. Basically, five minutes, a couple of which are devoted to Brett Primack talking over some concert footage. Then just a short excerpt of an interview (maybe from the '80's?) where he discusses his hiatus on the Bridge. Nothing really in here that even casual fans wouldn't already know... and not much in the way of interesting footage. One short excerpt from the Jazz Casual broadcast in the 60's, but if you've seen that, there's no much else here.

I don't think this is true, s(tl). My wife has an iPod. We don't download anything from iTunes, I just rip CDs she likes into MP3s and copy them to her iPod without converting anything. Granted these are not "downloaded from a source other than iTunes," but still, they're MP3s from a source other than iTunes.

Maybe not all iPods are created equal? She has a 20GB one.
