There's some possibility I could make the Tuesday night shows: I'll be returning from a conference in D.C. about then, and maybe could come up by train and stay in NY a night....

obviously there have been plenty of great sidemen who haven't been nearly as interesting as leaders, not to mention Cecil's recent taste in sidemen isn't exactly flawless. just saying...

I wish they'd find a venue with good acoustics.

I finally spoke with Vision last week and they had read some of the comments. They don't think a cocktail reception amd Vision are antithetical. In fact that's what we're thinking as well as even greater discount. I mentioned Dennis is in town during that time, and while not playing at Vision - we could hopefully work Dennis into whatever special hang they(we) create for JC, if that's ok with Dennis

It's probably the word "cocktail" I'm reacting to. Call it a booze bash and I'm there.

Not sure yet. I'd like to make a trek this year, but I'm also aiming for Jon's erstquake shindig. It also depends on how my back is feeling by then.

Yeah, all three things (the booze-bash, more discount and having Dennis there) sound great. Count me in too.

Yeah, I also really wanted to go to this year's Erstquake. However, my girlfriend will be living for a few months in Santiago, Chile and I'll use my two-week vacations in early June to go to see her in Chile for a week, and instead of returning directly to México I'll stop in NYC for a week to attend the Vision. Too bad, Erstquake sounds like it will rock.

Sounds great too me too despite the annual sour grapes session by chief commander aebly and secular leader Sankt Olewnik. Will the genius of the talimud boyz heroes ever be able to stand on itself or will it forever depend on the put down what others are doing?

I'll second that. I think it's a wonderful time and beautiful experience every year, but the old Synagogue's structure makes it difficult to really fully enjoy the music. However, having said that, I know that the crew do the best they can to just pull this thing off year after year. Perhaps there's somebody with $$$$ and connections in that big, filthy rich city, who would donate a good space for a week.

will you ever be able to post on a music thread without talking about us and your beloved taomud? all I said was that Cecil's hiring someone as a sideman doesn't necessarily mean they'll be a great leader. feel free to disagree, that's my opinion.

Totally off topic, but yes, Remi Alvarez is great! Too bad more people don't know about him. You should recommend he brings his horn and a box of the Craneo de Jade discs to sell...

Hi Dan, thanks for bringing up attention on Remi. He is a great player. I exchanged emails with him this morning and he's very excited about the prospect of traveling to NYC again (he lived there some years ago, studied with Roscoe Mitchell et al) and see all those great players. He also said that he'd definitely bring up his tenor (and possibly his soprano) provided he finds someone's house to store it (he said he'd prefer not to keep it with him in a hostel). I'm sure he'd be more than glad to play at the JC-Vision jam session/beer-bash.

Oh and for those who haven't heard of him, he's been playing free jazz/improv for a couple of decades now and he's arguably México's most prominent free player (along with multi-instrumentalist Germán Bringas). Remi found the trio Cráneo de Jade around 10 years ago, and its current line-up includes bass player Aarón Cruz and the great Argentinian drummer (based in México) Hernán Hecht. They have several CD's but most of them are unfortunately OOP. I already told Remi to check out this thread and see the interest. And I also have some videos (small clips with sound from a digital photo camera, a little more than 1-minute each) here in my blog, if anyone wants to see/hear, from a concert we organized in my town a couple of months ago.

Thanks for posting your blog, Gera. Lots of good information I've been looking for about improv and out music in Mexico. Btw, does the novel 'Jirafales' have anything to do with the good professor?

Ah yes. The character from the Chileno is somehow in search of a parental figure, and people used to say his dad (whom he never met) resembled Profesor Jirafales. As a matter of fact the first line of the entire novel is "Ta! Ta! Ta!"...
Read it when you have a chance, carnal.

I like that old synagogue. I was sorry when they moved the festival. Wish I could come this year which is sounding great, but it's just not in the picture.

Oh I like it too. It's a beautiful structure. Large enough to hang out comfortably and converse with people. Really a nice vibe. But I do find it difficult to get really close to the music or get a strong feeling of warmth from it. I think the sound goes straight up from the stage. The drums often suffer the most. But I'm nitpicking. The sound is good enough to enjoy. Hopefully I can get there for the entirety.
