Still, it does put the burden on the describer to justify how they can deduce intent of the musicians from the music, which is generally not so easy (especially without lyrics), and why I think it should be an accusation used much more sparingly then it is.
Ron, you didn't mention how familiar you were with free jazz. Did you have that reaction within the context of being familiar with that general area of music, or would that general approach sound that way to you regardless? (It does have a decades-long history.)

I'll never understand the need of a few here to parse the language of others. Most people on this board, including Mr. Thorne, write pretty well, given the informal nature of the thing. I certainly got what he was trying to say with the word "pretentious." Hell, even my decades-old Webster's defines the word as "ostentatious or showy," and that is certainly a valid interpretation--though obviously not the only one--of the clip in question. There are probably more important things to worry about than Ron's use of a word that I'm sure most of us had no trouble understanding.

I still regard usage of the word as ill-advised when you don't actually mean the hard-to-avoid primary (negative) connotation. And I'm confident that many, even most users of the word do often intend that connotation, even when they don't justify and aren't justified in doing so.
In any case, I will continue to attempt to parse others' statements, as I know of no other way to glean meaning from them. :)

Presumably, your Webster's shows that the word is polysemous and therefore may need to be parsed by others in order to clarify the intended meaning. Isn't seeking this kind of information a major part of being of a discussion forum like this one? Ron clarified his views and I understand but respectfully disagree with what he says. No malice intended.

You guys think too much about inanities. Ron's original meaning was pretty clear, regardless of dictionaries and parsing. It's cool that you have enough free time on your hands to worry about such things....

To you, perhaps. Quite obviously, it wasn't clear to everyone - at least I and presumably Nim Chimpsky took it with the primary meaning, hence starting this tangent in the first place.

Tubby Hayes & Jimmy Deuchar '65
A great Deuchar number. I just think that he was the nads! This is almost as good (though sonically speaking, it is better!) as 'Swingin' In Studio Two' from his '57 Sextet date w/Hayes and Derek Humble on alto.

Each Day Is A Gift.
This is short but sweet, and very nostalgic for me.
Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Straight, No Chaser - 1974
Walter and Roy look so hip in this video! Just like I remember them. Not to mention the obvious.

Another wonderful clip of Cannonball, this time from his 1962 sextet with Joe Zawinul, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes, Yusef Lateef & Nat.

Ron,
Thanks for the links to the one with Monica & Bill Evans. I also like this one. Beautiful....too short though! I never heard that song before.

Thank you for linking us to that beautiful Legrand/Mercer ballad, jaz4life. It would be wonderful to see the entire performance or learn if a DVD is available for some of the performances represented in these old clips.

Cool clip, burning dog.
Billy Higgins' ride cymbal almost made me scream, though. Henry Grimes was tearin' it up!

I forgot to mention that the Sarah Vaughan one is FANTASTIC also!
Wish there was a DVD available.

Just found out about THIS smokin' set. Check it out.

Each Day Is A Gift.
Thanks for that one, BFrank.
It was painful to watch Elvin chasing his bass drum & mounted tom, though. That's not fun when you're playing, trust me. Even Joe & Jimmy were trying to help him keep things within playing distance. I guarantee you that his hi-hat was doing the same thing.
There's a simple solution that apparently wasn't requested prior to the performance.
What a power house!

I hadn't noticed that, Ron. It appeared to be some sort of festival situation, though as there were 2 other drum sets to either side of Elvin.
Anyway, there can't be too many videos of Joe Farrell, so it's worth it for that alone.

Each Day Is A Gift.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed it on many levels.
It's just that as a drummer, it was all too familiar and painful to watch Elvin struggle to keep things within reach.
Yeah, I noticed the other sets on either side of him, too. I also noticed that he was playing my brand of drums . . . Slingerland.
