    YouTube (Non-jazz version)

I searched and couldn't find an existing thread. I find this so geekalicious that I had to start a thread in order to share:

The are a lot of nice music clips on YouTube. If you keep plugging names in their search engine you eventually come up with something.

    Astor Piazzolla

    Tom Waits on Fernwood Tonight

    Frank Zappa

    Captain Beefheart

    Robert Wyatt

    Nick Cave

    PJ Harvey

    Roxy Music

    Arcade Fire

    Iggy Pop & David Bowie

    David Bowie & Cher

    John Lennon

My searches on Brian Wilson, Gentle Giant, and King Crimson all yielded some tasty vittles.

This "Virginia Plain" is fantastic: Manzanera in full fly eye glasses, Eno on board, Paul Thompson rolling.

Some of those Beefheart clips are pretty great, especially the Belgian one from '69 and 'Booglarize'. And that shelved commercial for 'Decals'!

Didn't know Roy Estrada toured with the band in the early 70s. Also didn't realize how active Rockette Morton was on-stage. Would've guessed the opposite.

That might've been the longest 5 minutes of my life. Dazzling special effects though. I don't know enough about Shatner to know whether this is Andy Kaufman-esque comedy, or if he was just insane, or a combination of both, or what. If the thinking was, "I'm a star, watch me be mind-bogglingly horrible onstage and they'll still love me because they'll eat whatever we feed them", then he's a genius. As a side note, man are those some horrible lyrics, Bernie. I much prefer Shatner's "Mr Tambourine Man".

Yeah, I'm not sure, either. As of today, Shatner "gets it" when it comes to himself. Back then, he may not have. I don't know.

the William Shatner-as-dramatic singer persona is played out by now, but in 1978, Star Trek wasn't that long ago. so I think it's pretty obvious that it's a very self-conscious nod to that, the Captain of the Starship Enterprise talking about being a "Rocket Man". somewhat amusing, at least for a while (I stopped it before the end).

Definitely a nod to Captain Kirk. What absolutely ruined any chance I had of keeping a straight face was the 3rd persona, on the left-most part of the screen. The slightly disheveled character, with the bow tie undone and a somewhat manic demeanor. That pushed me over the edge into disbelief. Honestly, I'd call him a genius for this whether it was intentional or not.

Lucy In The Sky With The Diamonds -- this is the one that convinced me Shatner was at least a little deranged.

. . .first 75% of this is boring, but watch him just ABUSE people in the end. Wonder what Real's upper management thinks of this.

There's an Incredible String Band vid there that seems to be r-rated because the song has the word "breast" in it.
