Best of 2007
I know it's a little early, but any nominees yet? I'm having trouble coming up with 10.

This reminds me of someone at IHM who posted his list of the 10 best 2006 cd's he hasn't heard yet.

This is a record for beginning one of these threads. Better let it go down or it'll be hundreds of pages long by year's end.

I like the IHM guy's idea.
I had a professor once who wanted to have a party where everyone came as others see them.

You just started this now because you knew I was thinking of starting it.
I am with SDS on the Tin Hat as being can't miss.
I am going to go see them 1/27, hoping they will have copies of their new CD with them to sell. I love buying CDs directly from Carla. She is so sexy.

I would say that 2007 so far just doesn't stack up. There are very few jazz releases of note. I haven't felt the need to buy a single 2007 release yet this year. Is jazz dead?

No, that's going to happen under my watch. 2008.

How can you doubt Arve and Benoît?

I certainly have no reason to doubt them. It was just a modest attempt to portray myself as openminded.

Rob Mazurek's EXPLODING STAR ORCHESTRA "We Are All From Somewhere Else" so far. Easy choice for me as it's the only i have heard so far.

Best of 2007
Two months into the year... time to get the ball rolling. So far not a lot that's come in which I might list, but two definite early contenders:
Chris Byars, Photos in Black, White and Gray (Smalls)--more or less the same band as Ari Roland's quartet disc from last year, but I think this one is stronger, & Byars' playing & composing are terrific.
The Flatlands Collective, Gnomade (Skycap)--a Dutch/Chicago band led by Jorrit Dijkstra, with Jeb Bishop, Fred Lonberg-Holm, James Falzone, Jason Roebke & Tim Mulvenna.

How do you guys find these CDs?
I have the Tin Hat CD, but the others don't seem to be available yet or at least not in the U.S.
Or am I just looking in all the wrong places?
check that... I think one is available through e-music, but I forget which.

Well, I'm still adding to the 2006 list too.....
Another good one from 2007:
Michael Dessen, Lineal (Circumvention Music). The leader's probably not a familiar name, but the sidemen are (on most tracks: Vijay Iyer, Susie Ibarra, Mark Dresser). Excellent stuff, & it's nice to hear Iyer in a less relentlessly scripted context than on his own work--he good good here. & Susie swings hard!
The Nathan Hubbard 2-CD set & ARC Trio discs that were released at the same time on Circumvention are also very good, though I haven't digested them enough to be able to list them here. Nifty label.

Check Ruben Radding's free download for January in his current 12 For 12 project. January's performance is excellent. I've been loving it and am really impressed. Great idea, also.

The Irene Schweizer/Fred Anderson/Hamid Drake "Willisau & Taktlos" disc on Intakt will surely be a favorite.

I like this one very much and so would a lot of hardboppers here. A really nice session. Free but it swings, with lots of melodic variety.

I have been listening to this disc the past couple of days and agree that it is a good one. After my first couple of listens, however, I think I still have a small preference for Byars previous octet disc. I am still listening though.

Root and Sisco got to me.
Is it me, or is Dennis' playing on this one crisper and more melodic than ever?

Dennis is on a real roll. I can't even remember how many winners in a row there are, now.
