Currently doing that now. Hopefully one of the jazz newbies will past their DJ test and become qualified to do on air shifts.

I'd like to thank the JazzCat for helping out here, as I did in person last nite.
From this coming Sunday till about the 24th, I would doubt that you'll see me post on these boards much if at all while I'm away.

Val,
Her aunt Cat won't be there either, but I told Mike to send my congrats to his daughter. (Actually I have a perfect excuse for not being there: I am working in TV land.)

The way he takes the "straight up" quintet, the bop quintet format, really, of alto, trumpet, piano, bass and drums and turns it to the personalities in the band..."Big Idea" is the one (I think that's the title) that slays me. Taborn sounds clear and unequivocal....killin

The perfect choice, seemingly, for the piano chair on the date...dense and percussive...a great combination.

How much space do you have in your studio for live music? Just curious. Our's has been co-opted by the library, the classical, jazz and folk cd collection, to the point where we had to remove the piano. Any piano music we'll do off site and record as if live. Yet, in the fall, breaking new ground on a dedicated performance/recording space, large enough to hold a symphony with a seperate small room for jazz broadcasts (Blue Lake will use it in the summer for rehearsals and all, then off season it will be for the station's usage). Live radio is where it is at: there's a sense of helping to bring music to life, of being part of the process as opposed to the arrogant "the media is the message" position. The music is the message and the media, some media, is the tool to present it. Man you're fortunate to be around such an incredible pool of talent.

Essentially none....
Our studio is the size of a bedroom. We do have a set of mics for guests to talk. We've rigged them to accomodate a singer with accoustic guitar. I had a saxophonist be kind enough to play a solo unaccompanied piece once.
The vast majority of the artist interviews are done live via phone [occasionally pre-taped conversations...local musicians try to come to studio], with music featured from new or most recent recordings to support th cause.

Actually we have a little more room than what we had about 13 years ago. I remember when I was helping KSJS with their pledge drive (back in 1991) we were broadcasting literally out of a closet (Note to Mike S.: it is the current studio B in the lounge). The lounge was filled with vinyl records. Those records went upstairs into an empty room between the time that I have left KSJS in 2001 and when I came back earlier this year.
If my memory serves me right, KSJS moved into their current control room in either 1992 or 93. I was trained in the current control room and haven't had to broadcast out of the closet.

I used to use the old studio 'B' on a regular basis for analog production for the old "Jazz Concert Calendar" when jazz programing was blocked together on the weekends. Once or twice when today's on-air studio was down for repairs, including when the new board went in, I did at least a couple of shifts in the PHONE BOOTH;-)

Actually the oldtimers refer to studio B as the closet.

LOL. The old WKAR studios in East Lansing were like that, behind the arches of the facade on the front of the University Auditorium, and the rooms were smaller than Victorian....So you're mostly talking interviews. There's actually a fair amount of live radio performances across the country, too. On the 18th we'll have tenor sax, guitar (with amp), B-3 Organ (with Leslie if that's how she's spelled) and drums, plus two talk mics. Should be cozy.

Yes I did on his debut CD from a few yesrs back on Fresh Sound label.
Jeremy also makes some nice contributions on the new [Sue] Mingus "I Am Three" CD which is also on our current playlist.
I'll be speaking to him from Aspen, where he's playing the Jazz Fest there [and the area where my kids live and work]
