ARTICLE ON HELEN MORGAN, THE LADY WHO SHOT LEE MORGAN

Veteran jazz writer/radio announcer Larry Reni Thomas posted an article on Helen Morgan (aka Helen More) on his blog site: http://carolinajazzconnectionwithlar...s.blogspot.com. Incidentally, I talked to her recently (she had two sons) in Wilmington, North Carolina, and he knew nothing about the More moniker. He said it was misinformation and that he didn't know where that name came from. He said "whoever came up with that name is lying." He said she always called herself Helen Morgan. Enjoy!

Ease up, gentlemen. Take a chill pill and read the article. It's free. You might learn something. Life's too short to be a square all the time. I notice you are the same cats who always have something negative to say. That's cool. Sounds like you are jealous because you don't have the goods and that you can't get it for free.

    Be cool,

    Larry

Oh, I'm chillin' just fine, man.

The question posed in post #2 is really quite simple, even for someone who professes to be "cool" -- "Have any suckers paid $50 to read the interview?"

Yeah, the "article", such as it is, is free, but the following remains on Thomas' blog:

    Helen Moore

The recent Tom Pechard biography of Lee Morgan has possibly all that anyone needs to know about Helen Moore (he has her surname with two 'o's). Incidentally, he suspects that Moore may have been an alias because of inconsistencies in the court records. The book is better read for other reasons though: the experience of African-Americans and the jazz scene in Philadelphia and Morgan's life and career.

I talked to Tom several times while he was researching his book. He was excited and said that Helen's interview would be the missing link for his book. I offered him the interview for a small price but he couldn't or didn't come up with my price, so I figured he wanted it for free. I didn't just fall off a cabbage truck and my mama sure didn't raise no fool. I am surely not going to quibble about this Mrs. Morgan's alias. But I should think that any reasonable person with a ounce of intelligence would think that her son had nothing to gain by saying that he knew nothing about More or Moore. (She never called herself that either. Her maiden name was Joyner) I respect Mr. Perchard's work and as a trained historian, I would think that his work is just the beginning of the story about how the tragedy transpired. Finally, I am certain that the lady I interviewed was Helen Morgan, the lady who shot him. She was highly remorseful and told an interesting, sad story that only I have. If there is someone else who has interviewed her, please let me and her sons know. This interview is her story, straight from the horse's mouth as the old folks say. Read it and you be the judge.

    Be cool,

    Larry

Comments from the 1st born nephew of Lee Morgan

After reading the article I see that you don't have a clue to what your are talking about. My mother is the woman who brought Lee his 1st horn and for you to believe the words of a murderer and charge people (fools) for it is unbelievable. Maybe next time you can actually print the truth about someone it it is possible for you to do.

I first met Mrs. Morgan when she was a student of mine in a Western Civilization class (with a serious African-centered slant) at Shaw University CAPE in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1990. It was an evening program for students who worked in the day and who wanted a college degree. She had to be in her early sixties and it was obvious from the beginning that she was a person who had much more life experiences than the rest of the class. When I told the class, as a way of introduction, that I hosted a jazz show five nights a week at a local public radio station, she immediately said that she loved jazz and that her husband was a jazz musician. When I asked her his name and she said that it was Lee, I asked her did she mean the trumpet player Lee Morgan? When she answered in the affirmative, I said I would like to interview her one day. She said she would have to think about it. Six years later, when she was near death, she called me and said that she was ready. We talked for nearly two hours. I am trained as an historian, and have been involved in several oral history projects, so I realized the historical importance. As far as I know, she has not talked to anyone else about the tragic incident that changed her life.
