Greetings, Steve,
In relation to the Karaindrou question: Are there any plans to do something in Angelopoulos's honor?
Best,
Tyran

Not that I’m aware of. Of course, Eleni Karaindrou participated in several Angelopoulos tributes during his life…the better time to pay homage.
Karaindriou’s next disc, which was recorded live in concert in 2010, mixed just last week, and due for autumn release, does include some themes written for Angelopoulos’ films, but its primary focus is more on Eleni’s music for theatre, including Greek productions of Edward Albee, Tennessee Williams and more. There is also some of the music from the “10” television series mentioned here recently- all in new arrangements and with strong playing from Eleni’s cast of soloists, joined by guests Kim Kashkashian and Jan Garbarek.
best, Steve

Hi Steve,
I have a question about active ECM artists which recorded last album long (but not very long) time ago, like Ralph Towner (last album 2006), Anouar Brahem (last album 2009) or Tomasz Stanko (last album 2009). Any chances for something new?
Are the "At Home" album by Masabumi Kikuchi is in the ECM schedule this year?
Regards, Leszek

Upcoming ECM Releases
Hello Steve,
As I can tell it, here are some of the upcoming discs on the "jazz" end of ECM:
Recorded:
- Abercrombie/Lovano quartet - Within a Song
- Masabumi Kikuchi solo
- Benedikt Jahnel trio
- Bobo Stenson trio
- Michael Formanek quartet
- Fly - Year of the Snake
- Kuhn/Swallow/Baron - Wisteria
- Ketil Bjornstad - Vinding's Music
- Anouar Brahem quartet
- John Surman - Saltash Bells
- Food (with Christian Fennesz, Eivind Aarset, Prakash Sontakke, and Nils Petter Molvær)
To be recorded:
- Craig Taborn trio
- Enrico Rava quintet
- Meadow (Taylor/Brunborg/Strønen)
What am I missing here?
And, when is your next ECM production? It has been some time since your own last production!
FYI - Don't worry about the nay sayers regarding reissues. If any of those people tried running a label, they might have an idea of the logistics... I think you are doing a magnificent job!

I heard it's out. (edit: my mistake, I thought this was the new one!)

You're entitled to your opinion of course but some of us naysayers have insider knowledge of the market too. I worked for a label plus I managed music shops which sold lots of ECM and think that certain glaring omissions from the catalogue would shift significant amounts of units if the feedback from my customers (you know the ones with the money who keep labels afloat) is anything to go by.

Sorry, I cannot agree with what you are proposing regarding the movement of titles and subsequent sales. I own a small label and am very aware of the costs involved. ECM, of course, would have volume discounts, but attempting to reissue all titles just to please a very few people could potentially be a money-losing proposition.
Steve Lake is giving a lot of his time and energy to this forum, and he does not deserve to hear complaints about not being able to reissue a disc that might sell no more than 300-400 copies worldwide at the most (i.e. the Sam Rivers recording, which I own on LP).
Also, I hope to see Terje Rypdal this summer at the Vancouver festival, but I am not disappointed because Odyssey has not yet been reissued in its future form. I am very content with my LP and single CD.
I can possibly understand the disappointment of someone not being able to hear music that has provided pleasure in their lives in a more current format, but constantly sending negative messages to Steve to remind him of "glaring omissions" will not help the cause. Remember that ECM has well over 1200 titles, and making all titles constantly available is not an easy task.
Masabumi Kikuchi's At Home is not yet out, but the trio Sunrise is, and it is sublime - easily one of my recordings of the year thus far.

Hi Russ, thank you for kind comments, appreciated. I also feel, though, some solidarity with the frustrated reissue-hungry listeners like correspondent xdealer, but the reality is that we can’t get always what we want when we want it. That goes for the production team at ECM as well. Having said that: the Terje Rypdal Odyssey box and the Garbarek/Stenson box are printing in the next couple of weeks and should finally be available, barring catastrophe, by June…Your list of imminent ECM releases is impressive. You must have good sources! I think the only inaccuracy is regarding Brahem Quartet, who have not yet recorded a new album.
A couple more coming soon discs: an album with Arild Andersen, Tommy Smith and the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra playing new arrangements of pieces by Dave Holland, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, Trygve Seim, Keith Jarrett, and Arild himself. And there’s a new Louis Sclavis album due around the same time, with his new Atlas Trio.
The total number of recorded-not-yet released ECM albums, however, runs to several dozen titles in and out of jazz. Too many to list and far more than enough to comfortably fill 2013, without taking reissues into account. Meanwhile, the recording sessions continue and new productions are added to the waiting list all the time.
Best, Steve

Nice one, thanks for the update Steve. Fingers crossed no catastrophes!

Jim.

A new Trio album? Very cool.
When was it recorded though? I hope it's of somewhat later vintage than the last few which all seemed to come from the 2001 tour.

Steve;
Any chance that Bobo Stenson will tour the USA again soon? I recall that he was in NYC at Birdland (I think) several years ago, and, unforunately I missed him. He is a captivating piano player that I am sure would be a pleasure to see.

Thanks for continued updates and thanks to ECM for continuing to produce such amazing music.
Interested to read that Meadow will be recording for ECM. Their debut album, originally recorded for a Norwegian label I think then picked up by UK label Edition Records is a cracker, looking forward to hearing more...
Also looking forward to Kuhn/Swallow/Baron - Wisteria.
Any upcoming Stanko records on the horizon?

Would it be possible to post composer credits for the Fly "Year Of The Snake" release? I am finishing a long overdue update to the Mark Turner discography published at www.jazzdiscography.com and would like to include this recording. Although released in Europe today I think, the recording does not appear to be scheduled for U.S. release until June.
Thanks.

Jarrett release?
Hi Steve....further to an earlier thread...Do you have any info regarding a new Jarrett release, either solo or with the Trio, for later on this year?..I gather that the Trio "Somewhere" (recorded live in Lucerne 2009) is now scheduled for 2013,to coincide with their 30th anniversary..but you mentioned that a new release is imminent for 2012! Much appreciated Best Bren

Sleeve notes and Oslo, December 77.
Hello Steve and all ECM enquirers,
My first post here, so happy to see ASk ECM existing.
I read in Michael Tucker's book on Jan Garbarek that there were sleeve notes by Steve to Triptykon. I recently found a vinyl copy of this album but without the notes. I wanted to ask - is there was an online resource in which one could find such notes for ECM albums?
I have recently discovered the recording sessions made in Oslo in December 1977 that produced the three albums ECM 1118-1120 under Jan, Gary Peacock and Bill Connors. How did 35 years pass without me knowing about this deep music before now? I have it in mind to begin a little 35 years later research project, a filmic/writing mix, based on this music. Steve, is there any way of finding out more about these sessions from ECM?
Looking forward to further participation here,
best regards
David
