Rod listens to a lot of music with soft porn album covers.

I sense this is not what you have in mind, though.

How do you define "hardcore"? I like a number of bands that are considered "hardcore" in their respective genres, such as Minor Threat and The Dillinger Escape Plan, but I don't know if that's what you're thinking of.

SUNNO))) is a doom metal band. There are common roots with hardcore but a different thing.

Hardcore is a genre I've never been able to get with.

Doom metal - haven't heard that term before. But it works!
Actually, maybe they would be better classified as "drone metal", huh?

I grew up around DC, so yeah. Surfer lists a good, standard playlist above. Government Issue, which he excludes, was always my favorite.

Pissed Jeans is a new band, from Allentown PA or nearby. I recommend them if you are into the other bands I listed.

OK. So, I'm assuming we could put the Dead Kennedys in the "hardcore" slot, right?

    id say DK is hardcore.

Surfer, your hardcore music,is that the hardcore from the 80's and 90's, the original hardcore? because the stuff i listen to i think the actual term is post hardcore, not to sure, i havnt read up on it yet.

correct me if i am wrong, but didnt hardcore spring up in the early 80s-90s and then die off for a while?

I did a concert last night with my trio Yells at Eels and three support bands. One was my son Stefan's band Just Another Consumer...very hardcore thrash. The band debuting last night was my other son, Aaron's band Life-Death Continuum which sounded like a hardcore King Crimson, so I'd say, yeah, I listen a lot to hardcore!

When I was hanging in Dallas a few months ago at Dennis' place, I got to know how big of an expert Stefan is on hardcore. He played me some South American grind/crust/hardcore compilations that were the shit. Stefan and Aaron's political grind/hardcore duo Akkolyte is a must hear if you're into the genre.

As for myself, the first hardcore bands I listened to (early 90's, starting at junior high) were some of the NYHC classic ones: Sick of It All, Agnostic Front, Madball, Youth of Today, early Biohazard; most of them are a mixture of thrash metal and punk. I also had a sweet spot for Bad Religion's vocal harmonies; they are still one of my very top favorite rock bands (up until Generator). I also love early Corrosion of Conformity, only hinting to their sludge/southern doom style to come later. Also dig crust stuff like England's Extreme Noise Terror and NYC's Brutal Truth (my favorite grindcore band). Another band that was always interesting to me was Suicidal Tendencies; gotta love Mike Muir's lyrics and his delivery, plus Robert Trujillo is simply a bass god. SOZ was right to mention them.

Mentioning Sunno))) here is very appropriate I think since, like Corrosion of Conformity, there's an interesting tradition of hardcore bands who dwelve into doom/sludge/stoner territory, like the Melvins and Flipper (who even became proto-doom bands), as well as Eyehategod, Grief, Corrupted and Soilent Green.

Finally, I really have to mention US/Mexico's Brujeria, a band that started as a side project of heavy-weights from Napalm Death, Fear Factory and Faith No More. 1995's Raza Odiada is probably my favorite metal album of all times, fusing equal parts of sludge/hardcore/grindcore/industrial/doom and death metal with a huge dose of sense of humor.

Hardcore is DC and LA punk in the 80s. DC punk is Dischord Records.

I like TSOL, Zamora. Code Blue!

These are some of the pics I took of Stefan's band Thursday night at the Red Blood Club. It was brutal, as was Aaron's new prog-punk-hardcore band...

With the exception of Pissed Jeans, yes this is the "original" hardcore, mostly from the early - mid 80s. Other than Dillinger Escape Plan (not similar to the bands I listed, btw), I am not familiar with the other ones you listed.

Some of the bands that fall under this term started in the late 70s, perhaps during or slightly after the first wave of punk rock. To me, hardcore simply means 80s American punk rock, particularly of the more aggro and diy variety.

As far as bands, there is Bad Brains and then there is everyone else (Black Flag, Minor Threat, TSOL, Misfits, Suicidal Tendencies, Agnostic Front, Minutemen, etc).
    Asi soy, y que?

Good song: "George Bush's Daughters Need Discipline"

Bought at one of the best hardcore / punk shops in the US: Toxic Ranch, Tucson, AZ

Well, I'll have to disagree with my esteemed colleague SOZ here, despite the the fact that Bad Brains is a great great band. Minor Threat is not only the greatest hardcore band of all time, they are also, as a matter of FACT, no matter what others might say, the GREATEST ROCK AND ROLL BAND OF ALL TIME, based on the following criteria:

    1. minimal chords
    2. a scream
    3. attitude / rebellion / youth
    4. to the point lyrics

that's it, nobody ever did it better than they did, not elvis, not dylan, not the beatles, not los sexos pistolas, nobody. They said what they had to say, simply, loudly, and then stopped. There is no filler (but there is Filler), there is no fluff, there are no solos; economy of motion, action, expression. They defined DIY, they stayed true to themselves.

Complete Discography is a perfect document. Two halves make a whole.

I'm in the less is more camp--one reason Minor Threat is still so viscerally exciting is that you can fit their entire discography on one CD, and still hear how the band developed over time. It's almost like going from "Please Please Me" to "The Long and Winding Road" in less than 80 minutes. I know "Salad Days" is meant to be ironic and against nostalgia, but it's such a beautiful song and sacrifices nothing in speed and power, it makes me sad the CD is over and there's nothing more, ever.

Fugazi are good, they just don't do the same thing to me.

It was a tour poster, and yes, it was out there. That's how the members of the band found out about it.

I still can't believe Nike thought it was a good idea. Makes me laugh when I think about it.

    Minutemen = hardcore?
I love the Minutemen, but ...

What about Bad Religion? Too polished to be hardcore?

It was my understanding that it never got that far. It was pulled in production. In any case, Minor Threat had nothing to do with it.
