This event is in fact, a "Celebration" of the art, soul, history, and future of an all-American art form. We take immense pride in honoring jazz music's finest artists, and strive to nurture the new voices of today.
This year, Telluride continues its highly acclaimed format, making it one of the only places you can enjoy international artists in the intimacy of multiple indoor and outdoor venues. Jazz aficionados world-wide are hip to this unique festival where musicians perform and mingle with all who come to celebrate the music: from high-altitude high-attitude daytime shows surrounded by the magnificent peaks of the San Juan mountains, to the after-dark crawl through Main Street Victorian saloons and concert halls. This Celebration remains tops in jazz, intimacy, and ambiance.
A little history:
The Telluride Society for Jazz is dedicated to the preservation, appreciation and artistry of the "Great American Art" called Jazz. Since 1977, this event has consistently earned national and international attention for featuring the best in classic/mainstream, blues, and international jazz. It spotlights some of the finest internationally accomplished artists, along with exciting new talent, in a remarkable setting that brings jazz lovers to Telluride from allover the world.
Performances are staged outdoors in the day- time and in intimate clubs, historic concert halls, and the stylish Telluride Conference Center at night. We attempt to bring together, not just people who love jazz, but those who cherish the glorious outdoor scenery and the mountain adventures available in Telluride.
2003 TJC Artist Line-Up:
Cedar Walton (Guest of Honor)
Since his earlier days with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Cedar has been one of the most respected and prolific composers and pianists in jazz. He has long delivered a style that illuminates a bright and dynamite imagination, energizing everything around with a surging sense of swing. See him here in Telluride in both Trio and Quartet formats.
John Scofield Band
Even before this guitarists' guitarist performed in the early 80's with Miles Davis, Wes Montgomery, and Jim Hall, Sco was well known for his wide range of styles, all containing true fluency and virtuosity. He has since confirmed his reputation as a peerless jazz guitarist, while making groove and jam-oriented music at the highest level.
Kenny Garrett
An alumnus of Miles Davis' later groups, Kenny Garrett's powerful, dynamic playing has earned him a place among today's great alto saxophonists. Known for hypnotic, lush ballads and sparkling improvisations, Garrett's albums and performances have brought him worldwide recognition, four-star reviews, and top spots on reader polls and Rolling Stone's "hot list".
An Evening with Kevin Mahogany: Johnny Hartman
Kevin is the quintessential jazz vocalist, and a favorite friend of Telluride's. A native of the jazz mecca, Kansas City, his style is reminiscent of Joe Williams and Big Joe Turner. Kevin has been selected the #1 Male Vocalist in Down Beat's annual Critics Poll and has six releases, the latest on Warner Brothers. He'll pay special tribute to the late, great ballad man, Johnny Hartman.
Jane Bunnett & the Spirits of Havana
A most remarkable composer, Jane Bunnett just garnered a GRAMMY® nomination this year for her recent Blue Note release, "Alma de Santiago." The soprano saxophonist and flutist is one of the most exciting rising stars on the jazz scene and brings in one of the finest Afro-Cuban jazz ensembles for her Telluride debut.
Larry Coryell
As a pioneer of Jazz-Rock, Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the history books. He has brought nearly alien sensibility to the electric guitar with a hard-edged, cutting tone using phrasing and note-bending, and owing as much to blues, rock, and country as to jazz. He is a true eclectic, armed with a brilliant technique, and comfortable in almost any style.
Chuchito Valdes featuring Emilio Valdes
Descended from one of the most distinguished Cuban musical families, this Havana-born master pianist expertly weaves the styles of Son Montuno, Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz, Bebop, Bossa Nova, Cha-Cha-Cha, and other Cuban dance classics into his playing, much like his father, Chucho Valdes and his grandfather, Bebo. His brother, Emilio, a master of Afro-Cuban percussion, will join the band in Telluride.
Karrin Allyson
Karrin Allyson is one of the special jazz vocalists who bring new ideas to the genre of vocal jazz. Her album "Ballads" surprised many with her take on John Coltrane and won her a GRAMMY® nomination. Now she's raised the bar with her recent effort, "In Blue," which takes on blues in jazz. "…a singer's singer, a moving force that moves a listening audience in all the right ways…" -JazzReview.com.
Leroy Jones Quintet
Like his earliest influence, Louis Armstrong, Leroy is a crowd-pleaser from the moment he steps onto the stage. This superb trumpeter and singer delivers a great sense of authenticity that makes us recall the grand era of New Orleans with grace, humor, and tenacious entertainment.
Astral Project
Astral Project is one of the most exciting and respected modern jazz groups. From New Orleans, their 20-year history testifies to how well they make music together and move the crowd. "Astral Project blends a thousand influences into an alluring identity of its own." -Chicago Tribune†
DJ Logic & Friends
One of the innovators of turntables in a band setting, DJ Logic first made waves as Medeski, Martin, and Wood's fourth member. Since then, Logic has released numerous solo records including his latest, Anomaly, on Blue Note Records. DJ Logic will appear with Marco Benevento (of the Jazz Farmers) on B3 organ and Joe Russo (of Robert Walter's 20th Century Congress) on drums.

Reevaluating @ 500k
Nice lineup, but I think Telluride jazz Celebration would be a more appropriate thread title.
