There is something about a sunny day and that fifties west coast vibe. The Lighthouse Allstars are the sound track to many an afternoon barbeque for me. That and Coop, Shorty, Jack Sheldon and those guys really were the precurser of west coast pop in many ways. I know many prefer Hard Bop from the fifties but the beauty of Jazz is that it suits many moods.

    Durium:

Who's on this recording? How's the sound quality? I've always liked the West Coast bands.

    Yes

At $9.99 I went ahead and bought this CD. I'm very glad I did. Over 71 minutes and includes tracks from 4 live concerts. The cast varies, the performances are upbeat and inspired. A joyous CD - the rapport of these band is at times electric. The recordings are from 1953-55 and are surprisingly good - not great, but very listenable. To my mind, the big stars are Frank Rosolino and Shelly Manne. One of Rosolino's solos (on his compostion "Jean") has to be one of the very best long trombone solos I've ever heard. Manne is superb throughout, driving the bands with his classy, subtle rhythms. He's one of the best. Anyway, if you like West Coast Jazz drop the ten bucks for a real treat. I'm very glad I did. Cooper, Giuffre, Shank, Paich, Claude Williamson, Shorty Rogers etc. etc. are on many of the tracks. It's a French label, the packaging is neat. There's some other CDs listed in their series on the inside flap. I may check some of those out.

    Xavier-

What was your source for this CD?

I just received and thoroughly enjoyed a new DVD — Jazz on the West Coast: The Lighthouse. It comes with FREE shipping on Amazon.

    Hand in Glove

    Ron:

I have that DVD too! It's one of the reasons I took a chance on the CD. The CD and DVD could be a companion set. You'll really like the CD, spirited and exciting. I ordered the CD through Amazon and received it in the mail a few days later. There's a couple of more West Coast releases on that label -they look like studio recordings of various bands. I'm tempted.

I can't find this CD in Amazon (the DVD is there, though). Where can one buy the CD?

    CD

I just went into Amazon, and in the drop down music category, typed: West Coast Jazz Live

The CD came right up, no problem.

    Thanks, Xavier!

I noted that Amazon is indicating that it usually ships within 2-5 weeks, so if you're not in a hurry ...

Otherwise, a copy from a 3rd party seller who has it in-stock is another option.

    Ron

I ordered it straight from Amazon. Didn't go to the Other Sellers section. Quick and simple. It arrived within a few days. I was surprised, considering it's a French label.
