    BLUE NOTE RELEASES - CATALOG DELETIONS

    A large number of superb titles from the Blue Note labels will go out of print by the end of this year, including a number of CDs from the RVG and Connoisseur Series. So you don't miss out on albums that you have been intending to purchase, here is a list of the casualties of 2008. We don't know the exact quantities left on these items, so it's best to order sooner rather than later. To ease the squeeze, we have put a number of these titles on sale.

    I wonder how long it will be before they stop taking this stuff "out of print" and make the entire catalog permanently available online.

    I'm wondering about recordings themselves.

    BN has a policy of deleting all titles that don't sell more than 500 copies a year.

    They also have a practice of later repackaging. Not always, though.

    I'm not in True Blue's bracket anymore. Their sales prices are out of my league, but so's retail in general. I don't even look at store selections anymore. I'm not altogether thrilled with it, though. I miss flipping through stacks and coming away with titles I hadn't known I was going to buy. But times have changed.

    Just this morning, someone over on another board pointed out that Amazon.com is now selling "on demand" CD-Rs of out of print Blue Note titles. They have the Gil Melle 2 CD set for $16.95 now. I assume this could become the business model of the future.
