Lott was doing the same thing with Thurmond, but. being the chairman of the DNC you don't see it that way.

Pure politics at play here baby.

    Politics?

How do you justify complimenting a bigot for decades of repression?

That's like congratulating Jesse Helms for trying to undermine the Bill of Rights.

If a republican said what Reid or Clinton said, what would happen?

Same thing. People would give him shit. He'd probably take longer to apologize, but eventually, he'd have to.

Not quite Walter. The left (including the MSM and Hollywood) wouldn't rest until he was forced to step down, resign, etc.

You are smarter than that Walter, and are fully aware of the double standard when it comes to things like this.

Again, I believe this is a non-issue. Reid's comments, though not politically correct, were meant as a compliment to Obama. Right now the Republican Party is playing pure politics. It's wrong now, and it's wrong when the Dims do it to people like Trent Lott, who tried to compliment Strom Thurmond. Neither man was trying to hurt or demean anybody with their words.

Absolutely. Saying that we'd be a lot better off today if a virulent segregationist had been elected president in 1948 is exactly like saying the US is ready to elect a black man president in 2008, particularly if his racial characteristics are somewhat neutral.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not...if you are, you're going to have a hard time convincing anyone who isn't a partisan hack that Lott meant to hurt someone with his comments.

If you are not being sarcastic then we are in agreement that neither case should have been blown out of proportion like they have been.

Sarcastic, I'm afraid. That anyone should think that the contemptible Strom Thurmond deserved something other than a Tommy Udo treatment is beyond me.

So does this mean you believe Lott's comments were racist, or do you just hate Thurmond and possibly Lott?

Thurmond, on the campaign trail in 1948: "I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigger race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches."

Lott: "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either."

Instead of quoting someone else a yes or no answer would be preferable.

Do you think Lott meant any harm to anyone with that statement?

Even for you Wonkiak, that 'question' is highly offensive.
Q: 'How do you start free improvising?'
A: 'Well I usually start on D as a matter of fact'

If you are incapable of answering yes or no to the question "Did Trent Lott mean to hurt anyone with his comment" then you are being disingenuous in your outrage towards his statement. To me you are no different than a politician. The same politicians you so often criticize for talking around the issue instead of answering the question directly.

You are incapable of answering yes because you know full well he meant no harm in his statement.

    Very fucking sad.

I don't really know if Lott *intended* to "hurt" anyone with his comment, but at the very least it was a dumb thing to say, given that he put no context to it.

The answer is yes Wonkiak, YES - by expressing admiration and support for an avowed racist Lott was indeed hurting people with his comment.

Wonkiak, why not try being a halfway decent human being for once?

JMJ is by far more honest about this than you guys are. I agree it was very stupid on Lott's part. Then again, I never really cared for Trent Lott, and he certainly isn't known as a great speaker.

Having said that, do you really believe people should be castrated publicly for saying something stupid, even if they meant no harm in what they said? Is political correctness so ingrained in your minds that there is absolutely no acception to the rule? Anything that can be misconstrued as racist, sexist, etc. must be attacked unmercifully?

If we are honest then all of us would have to admit that we would have been stoned to death years ago for the stupid things we have said at different times in our lives. We are all human and we all fuck up sometimes. Does that mean we intend to hurt with our ill chosen words? Sometimes the answer is yes. Most of the time it's simply talking without thinking first.

Ok then. As an avowed believer in God should I be attacked until I stop breathing if I say you are an idiot for not believing in Jesus Christ? Would that be a crime so obscene that you could not let me live without me getting down on my knees and begging for forgiveness? And would begging for forgiveness be enough, or would you settle for nothing less than me stepping down from my leadership role in a political party, if I was a leader of a political party?

My example above, calling you and idiot, would be much worse than what Lott said. I would be attacking you personally and intentionally. Lott did no such thing.

Dude, can you at least try to make a sensible, germane and reasonable point for once? Huh, can you?
I sincerely doubt it, but I would like to have my request noted for the record. At least I tried...

Jeffrey, if you think that sympathising with an avowed racist doesn't make you unfit to hold public office then there is something severely wrong with your world view.
BTW if an avowed fundamentalist creationist bozo were in office in my country I'd be very, very unhappy about it. Too bad such types are two-fer-a-cent in your neck of the woods.

What's to miscontrue about Lott's statement? He plainly said that the US would be better off if we elected a racist to the presidency in the late '40s. For someone who preaches the gospel of personal responsibility, you seem to have a hard time expecting the same from a couple of Dixiecrats.

The erstwhile congressman from Tennessee and former Democratic Party "star" Harold Ford Jr. is making noises here in New York, saying he wants to run against Chuck Schumer's buttgirl Kirsten Gillibrand.

It gives me indigestion that any of them represent, or want to represent, New York.

Schumer is owned by Wall Street

Gillibrand is a former lawyer for Phillip Morris and Blue Dog Democrat, who violated her oath of office and attacked the Fourth Amendment with her vote for the FISA amendments act when she was in Congress.

And Ford is an employee of Bank of America and chairman of the Democratic Leadership Council, which represents the hard core Republican Lite branch of the party.

    All three are disgusting.

You may hold Lott in complete disdain, but I do not see how his comment was used to intentionally offend someone.

There are far too many people these days lurking in the shadows and hiding behind corners just waiting to be offended. The non-stop cries of "racism" coming from certain parties trivialize the genuine article, and may in the end be ignored by those who are sick and tired of hearing about it 24/7.

Even from you that's an extremely disingenous statement. Compare Lott to someone saying that whatever about his other policies, Hitler certainly build excellent roads and gave the Germans pride in themselves.

Pssh! Jeffrey m'man if you cannot see how expressing admiration for an avowed racist is intentionally offensive then there is little hope for you.

Indeed Tim. Everyone who lives in Mississippi is a racist.

I've never been so sure of anything before in my life.
