"By 1953, Oscar Mayer was running print ads, selling American consumers on the virtues of bacon-wrapped hot dogs. Perhaps Mexican consumers, inspired to emulate American dietary habits, took Oscar Mayer at its word, wrapping American-made hot dogs in American-made bacon, and claiming the resulting construction as their own."

I remember eating "Sonora-style hot dogs" in Connecticut when I was a kid. Although I still can't believe it, I'm 60 years old.

Sonora my ass! Mexicans all over Mexico have been eating them like that since forever.

Wait 'til they discover adding pineapple and ham to hamburgers.

Btw, it's not about "emulating American dietary habits". It's just street food sellers looking for different ways to make a living.

My father, who grew up in Depression-era Los Angeles, used to feed my sister and I with bachelor fare he called "Hot Dogs Royale." This was a hot dog with an incision down the middle into which cheddar cheese was inserted, the whole wrapped in bacon fixed by toothpicks, and broiled. Never liked it.

Jared would be in violation of his contract if he was caught eating them.

With curried veal and rice they called it Casimir in my youth. Probably my gateway to 'ethnic' foods.

    Wow.

In all my travels in Mexico, I have avoided hot dogs. I think the only hot dogs I've seen are the frightening weenies sold by street vendors.

I haven't been in Sonora in quite a while. I used to travel to Sonora frequently but I can't recall ever seeing those creations.

From the article, they look like they would give the Chicago dog a run for the money.

I put salsa and cotija on mine at home.
    Bright moments - right now!

Couldn't agree with you more, Oz. I posted that quote ("emulating American dietary habits") to illustrate the assumptions that "journalists" make all the time. A good dog is a good dog no matter where it comes from. The variations are endless, which makes a hot dog, in all of its proletarian splendor, one of the perfect foods.
