Paul Motian : Lost in a Dream

I guess this will be on ECM's site soon, but looks like the next Paul Motian ECM release is a live Village Vanguard recording with Jason Moran and Chris Potter, out in early march based on listings by a few retailers.

Review of their gig last year: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/17/ar...ic/17vang.html

    Looking forward to this one!

For those lucky fans in NYC, I see Motian's at the VV again in March with Moran and Greg Osby.

Thanks to UPS I got my copy a week ahead of the European release and I'm not disappointed but I'm missing a bass too much. Potter sounds better than ever and I am trying to imagine what Blue Midnight would sound like with Larry Grenadier or Dave Holland added

Been listening to this one in the car for last few days.

At first, the preponderance of slow tempos bothered me a bit. But I got over it fairly quickly

Chris Potter seems every bit at home with Motian's music as Joe Lovano is, and he deals with on its own terms-but in his own way. If anything, he is even more lyrical. I was particularly struck by Potter's seemingly effortless use of the upper register of his horn-it really sings!

This is one of my favorite recorded performances of 'Potter-as-sideman' to date.

Motian's "Cathedral Song" is my favorite track so far. This is a slower reading than the 80's quintet version on Soul Note. It's absolutely gorgeous!

Up to now, I haven't listened to much of Jason Moran. But that will change...

Paul Motian's music and his groups-especially his trios-are some of my favorite music of the last few decades. This one is a winner!

Potter actually has a fairly long association with Motian (although not as long as Lovano of course). I think the the first Potter appearance was on Reincarnation of a Love Bird back in 1994, and he's been on numerous Winter&Winter releases since then.

I agree. I've consistently enjoyed virtually everything he has put out as a leader going back to his 1st ECM release.

Slightly off-topic, but here's a review of Paul Motian last week at the Village Vanguard, with Mark Turner and Tony Malaby sub'ing for Joe Lovano:
