hey all. how doing? I had one of the most amazing musical experiences of my life last night: People Under the Stairs. Unbelievable best groove ever. Ever. Had to share with my musical friends. If you know of any upcoming shows by these guys, they are from LA, let me know. Cuz I can't find a sched. Love, t

Hey Tippy! How's it going? I've missed your witty posts. Welcome back.

The People Under the Stairs site [here] says they have no shows booked. You're right though it's pretty hard to find out anything definite.

    Merzbow - Merzbeat.
Got a ton of his stuff recently, and am finally in a place where I can dig it. Excellent, truly outstanding and extraordinary stuff, although this one is somewhat atypical

    Merzbow - 13 Japanese Birds vol 1 - Suzume
This is an amazing series - incredible sound worlds and great to hear him featuring drums (apparently he's got quite a reputation as a drummer which I was surprised to hear as he doesn't usually feature rhythm). As accessible as 'noisy' Merzbow gets - as opposed to Merzbient or the Music for Bondage Performance series for example

Wrote this off when it first came out, but listening to it again I'm surprised by the strength of the writing. Some great Accadacca tunes here - otoh Ballbreaker and Stiff Upper Lip are uniformly drab and uninspiring

Truly incredible stuff this - and Merzbow at his most accessible I would argue. Mature in style, as complex, subtle and nuanced as any music out there.

    Highly recommended.

Got this on a sudden impulse and am wondering why I didn't find it earlier. Not a big fan of Nirvana Unplugged, so their versions of some of these tunes (including the monumental 'Plateau') didn't inspire me to go out and buy it as it did countless others.

I recommend this cd very much. Richard Pinhas is a french musician best known as the leader and guitarplayer in the group Heldon.

Thanks for the tip lazarus, I'll be on the lookout for this one for sure.
Heldon sounds pretty interesting too. Interesting that in recent years Merzbow has been incorporating guitar and drums into his sound.

Great introduction to ICM for the uninitiated. And just look at that lineup!
    Shivkumar Sharma
    Hariprasad Chaurasia
    Brijbhushan Kabra

    Nice!

    The Beatles - Yellow Submarine

For such a small collection of songs I have always thought of this as one of their strongest efforts.

My apologies in advance, as ordinarily I would never dream of questioning someone's taste in music, as it's such a personal and subjective thing, but...

    Yellow Submarine
    Only a Northern Song
    All Together Now
    Hey Bulldog
    It's All Too Much
    All You Need Is Love

one of the Beatles' strongest efforts? Que?

All Together Now is a weak link but the rest of those songs are very strong. It's All Too Much makes Helter Skelter sound like Bubblegum Pop. Only A Northern Song and Hey Bulldog are gems. Yellow Submarine and All You Need Is Love are unquestionable classics.

Surprisingly little filler on this album many consider a throwaway.

I think it's easily his best since Graceland.

Everything Simon has done from Graceland forward is consistent in quality. If forced to choose one Surprise would get my vote.

I would argue that everything Simon did up until (and very much inclusive of) Rhythm of the Saints was either brilliant or outright incredible. After that, either variable or just plain disappointing. His glory days are done IMO. Leonard Cohen he ain't.

I did forget about the horrible Capeman record. But we disagree. He made some nice singles in his earlier years. He's been making nice records since Graceland (excepting Capeman).

Well, all musical taste is subjective so I ain't gonna press it buddy. Did you read my post right though - I said everything up until and inclusive of Rhythm of the Saints (which is an outtasight record, one of his very best)
