Delfeayo Marsalis opens a 36-city tour: Sweet Thunder: Duke & Shak

Jazz greats Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn paired the two in 1957, producing "Such Sweet Thunder." On Thursday, acclaimed trombonist and composer Delfeayo Marsalis opens a 36-city tour in his hometown of New Orleans with his interpretation of their work, an original theatrical jazz production called, "Sweet Thunder: Duke & Shak."

Marsalis, who's been playing the trombone since age 13, says much great jazz is the result of the younger generation's interpretation of the older generation's work. Now 45, he says Sweet Thunder is the outgrowth of that philosophy and tradition.

The opening night curtain is at 7:30 p.m. at the Mahalia Jackson Theatre.

I don't get it. What or whom did Duke and Strayhorn pair in 1957?

It's coming to Dallas later this month, so if anyone sees it I'd appreciate their feedback.
