"Extraordinarily" disturbing? It's common enough to have a name - association fallacy - and I'm sure many thousands of people indulge in it daily.

No matter how often I encounter this 'line of reasoning' I find it more disturbing than whatever else I've recently been disturbed by - hence 'extraordinarily disturbing'!

I, for one, am glad Allen West is investigating immoral dining in Washington DC:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...l?ref=politics

"Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) autographs a baseball for a fan kept away from the festivities during Saturday night's White House Correspondents Association dinner.
WASHINGTON -- Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) lit into attendees of Saturday night's White House Correspondents Association dinner for "laughing and living it up" as some in the country are suffering. But not only did West attend the highbrow event, he also spent time signing autographs for people who weren't allowed into the festivities."

Perhaps he was signing autographs for the small group of right-wing demonstrators who were displaying their signs to the passing traffic---e.g., "Don't believe the liberal media!" and "Breitbart is here" (he recently died). Shortly before the event started, I was riding by the Hilton on a bus.

But "weren't allowed in" seems odd, especially for the Huffington Post. I'd be surprised if anyone actually tried to get
    in.

I suppose Rep. West was chortling along with the rest of his blood thirsty buddies when Bush was making his WMD jokes at his dinner while soldiers were dying en masse in Iraq.

Rep. Allen West never fails to deliver. In this instance he's running a classic ruse out of the old timer politics playbook; when pressed about your past indiscretions, deny and obscure, even if you have to make stuff up; to wit:

"Professional rabble-rouser Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) wants to talk about President Obama getting high.

West raised Obama's past drug use at a townhall in Boca Raton on Tuesday after he was pressed on his military record. "If you guys want to go back and talk about what happened nine years ago for me, let’s talk about the president doing blow and smoking dope," he said.

A constituent had asked West to release a military report about his alleged mistreatment of an Iraqi police officer.

In 2003, West, then a lieutenant colonel, watched as soldiers beat an Iraqi officer. The officer's head was placed in a barrel, and West fired into the barrel, aiming away from his head, according to his testimony. West was fined $5,000, and resigned with full benefits."

What's even worse is that the crowd is all for it. They don't care about truth, they just wanna hear something bad about Obama.

"Card-carrying Communist" is an Homeric epithet, comparable to "Swift-footed Achilles." Very popular among right-wingers who apparently need mnemonics to remember which policies they support. See also "Job-killing regulations, "Islamic terrorists," etc.

    That's a poor mnemonic, though.

That's a better mnemonic, but it sounds kinda smarty-pants-ish.

That's a pretty good one, but probably too cerebral for the intended target.

That occurred to me too, Bourne. I believe, and even practice a lot of things, but almost none of my activities, political or not, actually issue a card to me. What a doofus.

    Huh?

Did you fill out the proper paper work?

Think of it as a warranty. If you don't send in the proper paperwork they'll try to screw you in the end.

But honestly, "card carrying communist" is yet another laughable line from the paranoid right akin to "red China".

I don't mean to insult your intelligence, but you do realize you can advocate heterosexuality without opposing homosexuality?

I am pretty sure that we don't need to advocate heterosexuality. It's here to stay. It's been around since...well...Adam and Eve. I also think Monte just liked saying "rosy-fingered dawn." Whatever the hell that means.

Once rosy-fingered dawn has appeared, the wine-dark sea becomes visible.
