    Cesaria Evora Dies...

Cape Verdean singer died at 70

I was fortunate enough to catch her live in Istanbul 2 years ago... will try and post short, grainy video from outdoor show later... sorry to hear that she's gone.

A rare voice. I was fortunate to see her 3 or 4 times. The best was at Bimbo's 365 in SF, which has great atmosphere. I also loved the way she got around the no smoking regulations by sitting at a table and smoking and drinking while the band played a number, making it part of her stage show, which apparently was a way around the regulations.

I have one of her CDs. Beautiful voice. A local television station gave a lovely tribute to her tonight. The link below is to the AP story.

Here's a link the tighter and shorter original record of Carnaval -- they've disabled embedding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmDLZ...eature=related

    Thanks, Steve.
My video from Istanbul is so grainy, that I wouldn't want to waste anyone's time... only enjoyable to me.
This one from Kiev the same year is not so bad, though...
