Creative Differences is proud to present Pierre Favre, the legendary jazz/improv drummer who's career has spanned almost 60 years. He is joined in a duo by the remarkable young trombonist,Samuel Blaser.

Both artists record for the Swiss label,Intakt and are appearing at The Stone in NYC as part of a two week celebration of the label.

Favre and Blaser will also perform in a much anticipated Quintet with 2nd Sunday Jazz regulars, Lafayette Gilchrist,Dave Ballou and John Dierker

Pierre Favre’s work knows no boundaries. Whether it’s free jazz, ethnic, or contemporary classical music, he has that rare ability to enhance the music around him in a magical way.Favre was born in the Swiss town of Le Locle, and has come a long way in his almost 60 years of drumming. Today he maintains residence in Zurich, and spends much of his time traveling to the many concerts, workshops, and recording sessions he is involved in. Despite all the accolades he’s received, Pierre remains very soft-spoken man with a great sense of humour.

Pursuing his investigations of the melodic potential of the drum set into the early 70s, Favre, originally a self-taught player, felt he was approaching the demarcation line that separated "drummer" from "composer". To learn more about the subject, he studied classical composition and immersed himself in the diverse percussion musics of the wider world, particularly those of India, Africa and Brazil, gradually consolidating all of this new information in the "sound-color poems" he was writing for his Singing Drums group.
His sensitivity as a percussionist has been evident on many ECM recordings including projects with John Surman (Such Winters Of Memory), Barre Phillips (Music By), Dino Saluzzi (Once Upon A Time - Far Away In The South), Arvo Pärt (Sarah was Ninety Years Old), Paul Giger (Alpstein) as well as his duet recordings with singer Tamia (de la nuit...le jour and Solitudes).

The fertile ground between hard bop and free jazz continues to attract the next generation of jazz artists, most notably trombonist Samuel Blaser.

In 2009, the Swiss-born and New York-developed brassman (now residing in Berlin) showed off the fruits of his rapid development as a bandleader and instrumentalist on Pieces of Old Sky, a CD that many jazz critics and aficionados recognized as a work heralding a talent to be reckoned with.

On Consort in Motion, his latest release, Blaser leads a trio with in-demand bassist Thomas Morgan and legendary drummer Paul Motian, again confirming that he is an artist abounding with daring ideas and concepts. Taking the unusual step if melding Renaissance and Baroque period music with jazz improvisation, Blaser creates on Consort in Motion a new musical world, at once oddly familiar and yet also startlingly compelling.

Earning serious attention and enthusiastic praise over the last few years for his daring virtuosity and engaging improvisations, Blaser is a prolific talent with a truly collaborative spirit. In listening to his spectral trombone playing you hear tradition, finesse and questing innovation. His strong, colorful tone allows him to express his musical ideas in a straightforward manner, so each nuance of his phrasing stands complete and purposeful. With an astute command of rhythm and an impeccable ear for melody and harmony, Blaser fashions entertaining original compositions that emphasize his versatile playing and deep commitment to the jazz aesthetic.
