Rochester Jazz Festival - June 22-30
Producers of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (XRIJF) (www.rochesterjazz.com) presented by M&T Bank today announced the lineup for their largest festival ever, to be held June 22-30, 2012.
The XRIJF 11th Edition will present more than 1000 artists performing at 18 venues and outdoor stages, in 300 concerts, including almost 70 free concerts.
Norah Jones, Diana Krall, Zappa Plays Zappa, Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers, Daryl Hall "Live From Daryl's House" with special guest Keb' Mo', Norah Jones, and Queen Latifah will headline the nine-day event. Concerts for Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Steve Martin (including second show added) are sold out. Tickets for Daryl Hall and Zappa Plays Zappa are on sale now. Tickets for Queen Latifah go on sale Friday March 25 at 10 AM at rochesterjazz.com.
More than 200 Club Pass shows will be presented at 12 Club venues including Kilbourn Hall, which will feature Christian McBride, Tom Harrell, Ninety Miles, Terrence Blanchard Quintet, Benny Green Trio, Eliane Elias Trio, Colin Stetson, Roy Haynes and Raul Midon.
"In assembling more than 300 performances for our annual nine-day celebration of creative improvised music, my goal is to harness the power of human expression through music in a calculated fashion, " said John Nugent, Producer and Artistic Director. "Like flying an airplane, we will get our audience up in the air, on cruise control and deliver them to a destination of musical utopia or shang-gri-la. The super wave of talent coming will bring our audience to new heights of aural ecstasy not yet experienced! It's going to be our best festival yet!"
Marc Iacona, Producer and Executive Director, said, "Once again with overwhelming multiyear sponsor commitments, XRIJF emerges as a gift-wrapped event that is ready to be opened and enjoyed by our festival fans. Exciting additions such as a new Club Pass Venue in the Eastman School of Music will welcome talented musicians and patrons. Our community will once again be an international focal point of one of America's true art forms. Even though Jazz was developed around the turn of the 20th century, it is reborn every June in Rochester, NY!"
The very first RIJF jazz star, Norah Jones, returns for the first time since 2002, as will the incredible Icelandic singer, Eivor Palsdottir and sensational trumpeter Terence Blanchard. Others to watch, recommends Nugent, are the return of Liane Carroll, Tessa Souter and Get The Blessing; first-time visits by leading Canadian stars Brandi Disterheft, Chic Gamine and Gypsophila; international rising stars IPA, Goran Kfajes, Mederic and Mathias Eick. The incomparable Catherine Russell is back by popular demand as are top American jazz stars, Nicholas Payton, Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard and 86-year-old jazz-drumming master, Roy Haynes. Trombone Shorty returns for a third straight year. XRIJF first-timers, Jimmie Vaughan & The Tilt-a-Whirl Band (Jimmie is the brother of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan), Gov't Mule with Warren Haynes and the southern rockers Outlaws will fill the streets with excitement on the major free open-air stages.
Presenting one of the most extensive international lineups of any U.S. jazz festival, groups will travel to Rochester from 14 countries including Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Scotland, Ireland, England, Norway, Sierra Leone, Hungary, Cuba, France, Italy and Russia.
