More to come when I get to a proper keyboard, but the Shorter quartet continues to astound. Blade was a man possessed last night. And at the prev set, a big band tribute to Wayne with a bunch of guest soloists Donny McCaslin was the runaway hit, among very stiff competition. I'm planning to catch his group this afternoon before my flight. Somehow I'd never seen him before. Gotta spend more time at Smalls.

I think he may have been at Jerry Bergonzi (with our old friend Phil Jiveman Grenadier). Bergonzi announced a song about Republican liars, and I could hear one person not applauding.

Sure would love to have caught Shorter's set with Blade on fire. And, the big band tribute, too.

My membership at Smalls Jazz Club has been the most bang for the buck I've ever spent on music. The amount of talent that appears in that cool little space every day is astounding! And, I've only experienced it via their live stream. I'm watching a rebroadcast of last night's performance as I type, a nice service provided between live performances.

oh, Pete, i can just imagine how exciting the music has been! i LOVE Blade! and he's such a visual treat as well. i've actually seen Donny quite a few times in NYC with the Mingus Big Band and at the Blue Note with Alex Sipiagin et al. come to think of it, i saw him recently at Monterey as well. and i think it was Ashley Kahn who interviewed him there as well. he's wonderful and seems like a hellava nice person too.
