Charlie Haden and Hank Jones--"Come Sunday"

I just started listening to this one and I like what I hear. I sometimes enjoy very quiet and stately music, especially when it is produced by musicians such as these. I have long waited for the sequel to "Steal Away," and it does not disappoint. I have seen some negative reviews, basically saying the music is too low key and too lacking in improvisation. Maybe so, but it only makes sense for Hank Jones to record these pieces so near the end of his life--and Haden is right at home with hymns and spirituals. They play together in a very connected manner, though I think Haden is more prominent here than on "Steal Away."

I have 13 or 14 versions of "Come Sunday," but I'm more than happy to add this subdued reading by Jones and Haden. Other highlights are "Down by the Riverside" (one of the liveliest pieces) and "Goin' Home."

Why is it that a jazz forum shows almost no interest in record reviews?

I don't know whether it's a lack of interest, or more likely, a case of relatively limited time to interact on a board such as this. I think that I've seen less overall interaction here since the economy "went south" than previously.

Perhaps if you post the review in The Alley, give it a provocative title and wander off in to some contrived controversy (e.g., rumors of a fist fight between the participants over their divergent views on oil drilling in California coastal waters)....

Apologies, I know this doesn't contribute constructively to the dialogue. "Come Sunday" has been on my (long) "want list" for quite a while. I've developed a strong interest in duo recordings, so I appreciate the review. Amazon didn't have sound samples for the CD; but now that the MP3 version is available, there are samples (though I would be buying the CD)

I like the new one even better than Steal Away, and I liked that one a lot

As I say, this is the kind of record that hits the spots for a certain kind of mood. It's shorter in running time than Steal Away, but also less varied. the inclusion of a couple of Christmas carols is a little odd--not bad at all, just odd. Charlie and Hank should have found time to cut a whole Christmas record.
