"As we set up for our "Satchmo the Great" screening, we wanted to take a minute and let you know that with less than 10 days left in the Partners in Preservation competition, we're going to start something new on Monday: every day at 4 p.m., a rarely seen Louis photograph on our Facebook page! Because you guys have kept on voting for us at www.partnersinpreservation.com, we'll give you a bonus one right now: Louis and his sister Beatrice ("Mama Lucy") in the 1940s!"

Pops' house stuck 13th the past several days; in all fairness #9-13 all show the same 3% of votes.
    I do vote each day.

    Today's picture.

"Time for our first rare photograph! This is one from Louis's personal collection and it is of Louis and his adopted son Clarence Hatfield Armstrong in Chicago 1933. Teenaged Louis began watching Clarence after his mother died in childbirth. Even after an injury to his brain, Louis loved and cared for Clarence for the rest of his life. Come back tomorrow for another never-before-seen image and remember to keep voting for us at www.partnersinpreservation.com "

    You're welcome, Ms. B.

This was added later to the picture.

"The reason it is misshapen and some of the inscription is missing is because this was originally cut out by Louis and scotch-taped to one of his collages! It eventually fell off but he still saved it, so this is a true rarity. (We have a couple of boxes of photographs that were once used for collages!)"

#SatchmoPhotoChallenge! This time, we need a caption because we don't know how to explain this one: Louis, wearing a kilt, pretending to stab another trumpet player! So who wants to caption it? Leave a comment! And please keep voting for us at www.partnersinpreservation.com. Less than a week to go!

Today's rare photo comes from another one of Louis's collages. It's a lovely photo of Louis at an outdoor cafe in Paris...but please note the message Louis affixed to the picture! Gotta love Louis's sense of humor. We hope you enjoyed this one; two more to go this week! Keep the votes coming at www.partnersinpreservation.com!

You might have seen the iconic photo of Louis playing for Lucille in front of the Great Sphinx in 1961. But you probably haven't seen this one of Louis riding a camel that same day! This concludes today's #SatchmoPhotoChallenge but there's still 5 more days to keep voting for us at www.partnersinpreservation.com. Check back tomorrow at 4pm for the next pic!

Satchmo SummerFest Fact of the Week: Satchmo's favorite dish was red beans and rice. In fact he loved it so much he often signed his letters "Red Beans and Ricely Yours."

A version you can copy & print:

    Pops Favorite Dish

By - Louis and Lucille Armstrong

    Creole Red Beans (Kidney) and
    Rice

Courtesy of the Louis Armstrong House Museum

    Ingredients:

    1 lb. kidney beans
1 lb. salt pork (strip of lean, strip of fat; slab bacon may be used if preferred)
1 small can tomato sauce (if desired)
6 small ham hocks, or 1 smoked pork butt
    2 onions, diced
    1 green (bell) pepper
5 tiny or 2 medium dried peppers
    1 clove garlic, chopped
    Salt to taste

    Preparation:

Use a 2 qt. pot with cover. Wash beans thoroughly, then soak overnight in cold water. Be sure to cover beans. To cook, pour water off beans, add fresh water to cover. Add salt pork or bacon and let come to a boil over a full flame in covered pot. Turn flame down to slightly higher than low and let cook one and one-half hours. Add diced onions, bell pepper, garlic, dried peppers, and salt. Cook 3 hours. Add tomato sauce and cook one and one-half hours more, adding water whenever necessary. Beans and meat should always be just covered with water (juice), never dry. This serves 6 or more persons.

To prepare with Ham Hocks or Pork Butts ... Wash meat, add water to cover, and let come to a boil in covered pot over medium flame. Cook one and one-half hours, then add beans (pour water off) and add rest of ingredients to meat. Cook four and one-half hours. Add water when necessary.

    Suggestions:

For non-pork eaters, chicken fat may be used instead of salt pork. Corned beef or beef tongue may be used instead of ham hocks or butts.

    Rice:

    2 cups white rice
    2 cups water
    One teaspoon of salt
    One pot with cover

Wash rice thoroughly, have water and salt come to a boil. Add rice to boiling water. Cook until rice swells and water is almost evaporated. Cover and turn flame down low. Cook until rice is grainy. To insure grainy rice, always use one and one-half cups water to one cup of rice ...

    To Serve:

On dinner plate ‚ Rice then beans, either over rice or beside rice, as preferred. Twenty minutes later‚ Bisma Rex and Swiss Kriss.

"The four projects that receive the most public votes will have their grant requests fully funded, and the remainder of the $3 million in grants will be given to a number of the other sites after review by American Express, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and an advisory committee composed of civic and preservation leaders from New York."

    What a wonderful photo.

You can clearly see the lip callus which had formed on Louis' upper lip from his embouchure, over many years of playing.

    I also voted ... again.

    Ron:

I noticed that. I would say it's at least 5-10 afters after he ruptured his lip aka "Satchmo's Syndrome". You know you have off the hook skilz when they name Syndromes after you.

Not sure what is going on with Lady Day's right arm.

I am sure you know....I am predisposed to loving that picture of him and Ella.

"Did you know that Louis Armstrong stopped a Civil War? He arrived in the Congo in 1960 in the middle of a war...but both sides stopped fighting to greet Armstrong, carry him into a stadium and watch him perform. The fighting resumed as soon as he left! Such was the power of Ambassador Satch. Today's #SatchmoPhotoChallenge is a rare color photo of Louis being triumphantly carried to the concert. Please keep sharing and voting for us at www.partnersinpreservation.com! "

I thought of that....it just seemed unusual for someone as experienced as she was to to do it on the outside of her arms and than go sleeveless.

The other possibility I thought of was someone abused her.
