Adamo reaches into the pre-rap turf of Gil Scott-Heron here with this seductive too-short flash memoir about how he discovered jazz and its legendary envelope-pushers—Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis. There’s energy and honor and wonder in Adamo’s words, especially in the fluid alliterative syncopated way the words reflect the inspiration that jazz gave him—as an artist, as a human being. Complementing his nimble vocals are former Herbie Hancock drummer Mike Clark and guitarist Steve Homan, both of whose equally homage-ist beats and licks, respectively, are clean but entirely their own.

Devon Jackson has written about music and film for a variety of publications--from Entertainment Weekly and The Village Voice to Rolling Stone and Details. He is also the author of Conspiranoia! and currently the editor of Santa Fean magazine.

Are you asking the site owner or the registered users at large?

As far as I'm concerned, any post in which Monk's first name is misspelled is spam.

    Wow! Tough crowd.

I'd say in any random group of jazz fans, a goodly proportion would spell Thelonious wrong. (Apparently it's a name of Germanic origin meaning 'Ruler of the People')

    For the win!

I am still trying to figure out his last thread to Ms. Gilbert.

Okay, how about "any promotional post in which Monk's first name is misspelled is spam"?

I'll bet that the apparent source of the unquoted quote, Devon Jackson, had spelled it correctly.

How much do you want to bet that the apparent source of an unquoted quote, Devon Jackson, had spelled it correctly?

Hmmm, good point Rita, good point.

    Re potential stakes, casting around my immediate vicinity I find that I can bring the following to the table ;
Some severely verdigrised copper coins of dubious denomination, 3 grams of bellybutton lint, and a half full box of GoCat (chicken & rabbit flavour).

Want to throw down Rita? What you got to match that?

Unfortunately, I had to withdraw the invitation to bet because I think I screwed it up. I would want to bet that the source had spelled the name correctly.

Maybe the Kenny G crowd. I don't know anyone who is a fan his that would spell it wrong.

I did once go to a record store and found him listed as The Lonious Monk. I walked out immediately. haha

It's a variation on the Latin version of the Germanic Tillman. A better translation would be...Mighty, Powerful Man.

I'll tactfully accept your withdrawal, but I think we both know that you chickened out when you saw the size of the stakes!

    Aw, that's kind of cute:

    a lonious monk

I once met a lonious monk
Who thought most jazz music was junk
    On piano and bass
    He made a strong case
    For being THE lonious monk.

I have a grandson whose first name is Theolonius. I told J.C. that they spelled it wrong but he said that the name comes from old Roman philosopher who spelled it it that way. All I know was when the kid was born my son had "Straight, No Chaser" on the CD player.

I plan to check with Theolonious the next time I run into him at the 7-11. He's usually hanging out with Elvis.
    Bright moments - right now!

Wow, that's some 7-11 Mr. Hopson! I'm betting they've got some pretty esoteric Slurpee flavours on offer.

Btw, you're going to kick yourself when you read your post again I think.
